Insider Report - October 2nd
With the start of a new football season, GamecockCentral.com is happy to announce a new feature: The Insider Report. Check back each weekday during the season for a new edition.
For continuity reasons, if you have question regarding this report, please use today’s “Ask Tony" thread on The Insiders Forum.
Recruiting tidbits
Stephon Gilmore, Charles Holmes and their South Pointe teammates will play their biggest game of the year tonight against intra-city rival Northwestern. Both teams are undefeated and have played very well this year, so it should be a great ballgame.
I’ve heard from sources close to the Fork Union program that both Chaz Sutton and Ronald Byrd have been very impressive thus far. The Fork Union coaches believe they are the two best defensive prospects on their team and compare Sutton to former Virginia star and current Cincinnati Bengal Darryl Blackstock, who also prepped at Fork Union.
Team Information
As of today, things are looking positive where wide receiver Kenny McKinley is concerned. Carolina’s coaches/medical staff still have to see how the hamstring responds the rest of the week, but they currently plan on him making the trip and playing against Ole Miss. If he’s anywhere close to 100%, his presence could be huge for the Gamecock offense.
Maybe the one player who would benefit most from McKinley’s return is tight end Jared Cook. Ole Miss would not be able to double team him as often, which should lead to him getting open more down the field. Certainly Chris Smelley and Stephen Garcia will be happy to see McKinley back in the fold.
Bobby Wallace is going to get the opportunity to build on his performance against UAB and will be the backup running back this week. Eric Baker will likely be the third back off the bench ahead of Brian Maddox.
