Recruiting tidbits
Valdosta (Ga.) offensive lineman and Tennessee commitment Antonio Foster may take an official visit to South Carolina, but he’s not the kind of prospect the Gamecocks would wait around on forever. He’s not a player they would take regardless of numbers.
Tucker (Ga.) three-star prospect Jonathan Davis is a player still on Carolina’s radar, and they like him as a safety. He’s the kind of player who could play the same spot as Emanuel Cook or the spot currently occupied by Darian Stewart. The Gamecocks have been his leader for some time.
It’s a two-team race for St. Matthews (S.C). Calhoun County four-star wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey. He’ll either stick with his Southern Cal commitment, or he’ll be a Gamecock. If he does switch, I expect it to happen in late January/early February. I could even see it happening on signing day. With the commitment of Ben Axon, Carolina no longer has room for Jeffrey’s teammate David Sims, but I don’t see that having much of an impact on Jeffrey’s decision.
Team Information
The coaching staff has spent a lot of time the last two weeks working on their pass protection issues, and I expect there to be some changes in that regard against Tennessee. The Vols will likely disrespect the Gamecock running game, pin their ears back and come after Stephen Garcia, and Spurrier and Co. are getting the players prepared for it.
Offensive lineman Jamon Meredith’s ankle injury has not healed quite as quickly as the staff had anticipated, but he still may be able to play on Saturday. He is receiving extensive treatment, as they know how important it is to get him ready if possible.
Two of Tennessee’s top defensive lineman - Dan Williams and Wes Brown - have not practiced this week and are not expected to play much, if at all, this weekend.
