Recruiting tidbits
Coffeyville (Kan.) four-star offensive lineman James Carpenter took an unofficial visit to Carolina yesterday. I was unable to reach him for an interview last night. I hope to do so today, and I should have more information from my sources later this morning. (edit: here's an update)
Manning (S.C.) 2010 cornerback John Fulton picked up an offer from Carolina after a standout performance at their summer camp, and they’ve been hot on his trail since. Assistant coach Shane Beamer went by the school last summer. The Gamecocks are the team to beat for his services.
Manning is also home to junior defensive end Dexter Morant, who also sports an early offer from Spurrier and Co. Clemson is thought to be at the top of his list, but he did attend Carolina’s camp and a couple of their home games this season.
I continue to hear nothing but positive reports where Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes 2010 star running back Marcus Lattimore is concerned. While not always an indication of a player’s college intentions, I hear Lattimore wears Carolina gear to school multiple times a week. Obviously there is a long way to go, but I still feel comfortable calling the Gamecocks the team to beat. Georgia and Alabama are both factors as well.
I just found out yesterday that college coaches can not attend the Shrine Bowl practices this year due to an NCAA rule change. I hear they will be re-voting on the ruling in January and it could be overturned for next season. In my opinion, this is a poor decision by the NCAA, as it hurts the players who have a chance to really make a name for themselves in the practices leading up to the game itself.
