My brother asked to borrow some tools to put the kids Santa gifts together. It felt like a gut punch, I luckily conned him into just letting me put the stuff together. I absolutely hate lending tools outs. I would rather let someone borrow money than my tools. Anyone else like this with their tools?

BUT IT WAS YOUR BROTHER FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! Lend your tools to your brother. LOL!

Fine, you can let me borrow some money.

I suck at that stuff so I don’t have many tools and the ones I have I’m more likely to damage tools then the person borrowing them.

I’m with you, guy. I don’t like to lend nor borrow tools. If I need something I don’t own tool wise, I’ll buy it.

It’s like this, nobody is going to take care of your tools the way you will cause you paid for them and you treat them right. Plus, there’s a chance you won’t ever see them again because again nobody cares more about your stuff than you! I’m right there with you!

I wouldn’t lend my brother tools either. He takes care of nothing…..except his electronics.
My brother reads this board, and I love him. We’ll hunt together tomorrow, and I hope he drags my deer to my truck tomorrow. I have and always will help him do anything. I just don’t like letting anybody borrow my tools 🤣🤙🏼

I'm more concerned your brother doesn't own the tools to put a child's toy together! Almost like a man who doesn't own a truck. Is he really a man?! Hahaha. I'm kidding.
I'm good at borrowing my dad's stuff that I just never return. 😀

My brothers know how I am about my tools. They don’t ask often, but when they do, they’re very careful to care for them and return them promptly. But now, I don’t like loaning my tools out to anyone, really.

Don’t do it. If he was a good brother he wouldn’t ask

I dont mind lending my tools to anybody, but I never do simply because I can't ever find them. When I need a tool for myself it comes down to 2 choices. Either spend a half day looking thru a mountain of junk or going to Harbour Freight & buying cheap Chinese crap that always gets the job done. I'm at Harbour Freight alot. I'm just not going to spend 3 hrs looking for my hammer when I can buy one for $10.

Deepfried, nothin' personal now, but I'm with FreddieB on this one.

Please understand, from my perspective, it kinda hits home in regards to 1.) It involving your brother, 2.) It being for gifts for your nieces/nephews, and 3.) It being Christmas time.

Again, not scolding ya! Rather merely offering a suggestion based solely on my recent experience(s).

My brother, whom was born 3 years and 3 months post my birth date, was 199.9% my backup, no matter what nor when, as was I to he, and even moreso as we grew up.

To get to point, my brother was 50 years of age when he unexpectedly passed away on April 29th of this year.

I'll spare the details of such within this post, for the reason I've decided to reply as I have, is to simply remind myself that I was there for and with him until the very end, and to simply share my experience with you to your inquiry/post.

In closing, By No Means should you take such (i.e., my post/reply herein) within even the slightest of an insult!!!

Merry Christmas, and please don't forget: your decision, no matter what, is just that: Yours!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

My brother, I wouldn't mind. Brother-in-law, that's a different story. He borrowed a breaker bar from me once and BROKE it. Didn't offer to replace it. He said since it was a Snap-On, they would replace it, which is true, but dang.

That's right! Friends don't let friends and family borrow tools. It's a losing proposition. Tried to get a hammer back from my cousin, with my name engraved in it, he opened this box and said I got lots of tools, but not sure how. He said I was mistaken about my hammer with my name on it.

P.S. If they break your borrowed tool, they give it back broken and say, I'm not sure what happened"!

Engrave "return to _______ " on the tools you lend. Engravers are inexpensive.

I also write that in books I loan out.

If it were a rare tool he may never need again, I'd reluctantly loan it making it clear I wanted it back asap. If it were a common tool I felt every household should have, I dont think I'd be doing him a favor loaning it to him. That would be a no.

My tools are like family, I can do what I want to them but you can’t. I treat them like Tim Allen does minus the mishaps, and I’m not a fan of lending. After working construction on/off for about 30 years, I have numerous pliers, hammers, etc…mostly cheap stuff because other contractors show up at jobs, and not only want to use your tools, but they like to disappear. You are right to be concerned

Yard tools? Okay, my neighbor can borrow my wheelbarrow any time she wants.
A particular screwdriver for a particular job today and return today? okay
Woodworking/mechanics tool/construction tools. Almost never.

Power tools. Only one person. He also lets me borrow tools. ALWAYS returns the at the time and date he promises in great shape. If he borrows by giant Husqvarna with a 42" bar, he returns it with all the cutters sharpened PROPERLY.- we learned to properly sharpen together and he is as good as me

The only person that I share tools with is my dad, and most of them we bought through the business, so I guess they're technically "ours". He knows I take care of his, he takes care of mine. He has more than I do, especially woodworking, and he has a shop where he could build cabinets/furniture, and I can use it anytime that I want.

However, he has a group of friends that in the past he hasn't been able to say no to. That results in things not being returned, don't know who he lended it to, etc., which is incredibly frustrating. So many times in the past he'll call me and ask if I have XXX because he can't find it. I tell him every time that he knows I bring things back, so no, check with your friends.

We've started keeping most of the things that people like to borrow in a tool room at work. That way he can tell his friends that he doesn't have them and technically not lie to them. :)

Why wouldn’t your brother have his own tools? Not having tools is an indication that they don’t know how to use them. But you know him better.
He wanted to borrow my Hex and Torx bit socket set. He didn't want to waste time using his allen wrenches. He has a very vanilla set of tools.

I made the mistake of letting a good friend borrow my f350 truck to pull his camper to Florida for a family event. I took the truck and had it serviced including changing the trans fluid. they analyzed the fluid and pronounced everything in great shape. I got a call from the friend that said, your transmission is toast. He said It just quit pulling. His wife laughed and said, I bet you won't let us borrow anything again. It took almost two weeks to get a new transmission and $7800 in repair cost. The technician said when he dropped the pan, all manner of metal flew out of the trans. He said from the burnt smell of the fluid, the trans had been abused. He never offered to pay a single penny but just complained that he was being inconvenienced because my truck broke. Truck was finally fixed and the day he was supposed to bring it home, he posted a Facebook pic showing my truck loaded down with watermelons he was selling. We had words and are no longer friends.

Bottom line, a wise man once said "neither a borrower or a lender be. " I quit lending stuff.

A $100.00 gift certificate to Harbor Freight can go a long way. Or better yet, just go buy the guy $100.00 in tools and call it a day. On a side note I can't imagine allowing a friend to borrow my vehicle to pull a camper. I'm not so sure that was a smart thing to do.

I don't even admit that I have tools...... That should tell you how I feel about people borrowing them.

I’ll loan a shovel, rake, wheelbarrow or hand tools to friends and neighbors with the understanding to return it as soon as possible. But never do I loan power tools, battery charger, welder, or mower or anything they can break.

It's not just you. Tools entrusted to others have a way of getting damaged, misplaced, or simply forgotten about by the borrower. I don't put people in that uncomfortable position. Either I buy my own or ask my son to do my odd jobs for me. He's better at them than I am and can deal with electricity and plumbing very well. And the issue of borrowed tools never arises.

Drill bits, saw blades, and maybe extension cords (generally anything that is likely to get worn out or damaged by regular use) are about the only things I'd consider worth buying from Harbor Freight.
