Is Rattler the savior of Gamecock football? (Mentally prepared for the barrage of posters who will only read the title before responding)

Is that too much to expect of a single player?

Without question, he’s the most anticipated signee we’ve had in a long time maybe. Maybe ever, considering all factors. We had a lot big commits under Spurrier, but we were already pretty good then so none were considered saviors for the program.

But that is certainly how many (most?) are looking at Rattler.

To be certain, this is THE moment for Beamer and Satterfield to show what the offense can do with a good QB under center. Among other factors, QB play severely limited what our offense was capable of last season. That presumably won’t be the case this season.

I say “presumably” because Rattler did have a drop in production from 2020 to 2021, which begs the question: How much stock do you put in Rattler getting benched this past season? Is 2020 or 2021 the better representation of who he is as a QB?

We’ll have one our most highly anticipated spring games we’ve ever had this year. EVERYONE in Gamecock Nation is looking at Rattler as the key component for this season. If the offense takes off, it could set the table for Beamer to recruit higher caliber players once they see how the offense performs with a good QB. If the offense still struggles, it’ll be perceived that the offense couldn’t get it done even with a top caliber QB.

He's only gong to be here one year. One year savior are pretty strong words.
I agree, but I do think a lot is at stake in terms of Satterfield having an opportunity to show what the offense can do. At least this past season we had the “we don’t have a good QB argument” but that won’t be the case with Rattler.

Only time will tell. I will say this about Spencer Rattler. Coming out of high school in Arizona he set all kinds of passing records, qb records. He had tons of offers from power 5 schools. He chose Oklahoma, sat out his freshman year behind Jalen Hurts (the transfer qb from Alabama) then the next year he had a really good year. Completing 70% of his passes, with td to interception ratio was really good. He was the leading candidate for the heisman trophy. What went wrong is an answer that I do not know. But I do know this from talking with a reporter friend of mine a kid who has all the tools, got expert qb coaching from a private coach all of a sudden is benched. I know he probably had a bad game or two but in my humble opinion the kid is still an elite talent. Sometimes in sports a change of scenery is good. Look at the qb at Kentucky. He was not doing very well at Penn State, so he transferred to UK. Well the kid had a really good year at UK, another example is the qb at Liberty. He was at Auburn was struggling so he transferred to Liberty. Now he is expected to probably go in probably the fifth or sixth round of the NFL draft. I will say this you do not throw out the window all the elite talent Rattler has and not say this kid can do better at a different school and a different environment. Another thing you do not completer 70% of your passes and have the leadership skills this young man has. You just don't throw this kid out and say he is a bad qb. Look at the kid from Clemson D.J. U . Coming out of high school he was the number 1 qb prospect, well for whatever reason he has not lived up to expectations. But the kid does have talent. Will he end up his career at Clemson probably not especially with Klubnik coming in. I look for him to transfer next year. Anyway only time will tell. Rattler has all the tools, leadership skills and everything else an elite qb has. You do not complete 70% of your passes and have great leadership skills and not be an elite qb. A lot of posters on the OU board are of the opinion that LIncoln Riley did not handle the qb situation with Rattler good at all. Only time will tell, hopefully he comes to USC and has a great career and then decides to go to the NFL.

Rattler threw two picks in the Red River Rivalry and got benched. OU is QB U so having Williams sitting ready to lead the comeback was ready made. Spencer could have very well turned it around in that game but Riley never gave him a chance. Then Riley bolts to USC-W. Go figure.

Here's a game break down link.

Other than a 5 td game against an overmatched team, he was literally throwing 5 td and 5 ints in 5 other games at that point. His percentage was high, but this was not an issue in just the Texas game.

The bigger question is what changed from 2020 to 2021.

That's my question precisely. Tell me a qb who has not had a bad game at one time or another. Even Tom Brady has had a few bad games in his career.

I’m not tracking what you’re saying. He literally had no 5 INt games. He only threw 7 all of 2020.

Where did you get this assumption? Lemme guess.....you just assumed?

It’s just the sense I get from reading posts online and chatting with other Gamecock fans. None have outright said they expect him to savior, but you can easily sense from the way they talk about us signing him that they have extremely high expectations.

Please take a quick moment to read the entire post. You’ll find that I did not label him as the savior of the program. I was merely addressing the sky-high expectations many fans have.

Don’t be a low-information poster. Read before you reply.
Hmm, must of touched a nerve.

Rattler clearly has the physical ability. The rest is between the ears for all quarterbacks, assuming you play behind a strong O Line, and have a balanced attack

Very much so. Uninformed responses are the bane of my existence.
Your original post was not informative in nature, but more editorial, not necessarily wrong, but editorial nonetheless.
In the title for your thread you stated "Mentally prepared for barrage....)
Yet, by your responses to myself and others you may not have been as well prepared as you seem to think.
Have a good day.

His average pass completion was also down about 2 yards as well which a is pretty significant dip. Having not watched any of the games I don’t know if it’s injuries, defensive adjustments or just a classic regression that happens sometimes once there is tape on a guy.

There is absolutely reason to be excited about him coming on board. He’s played well in the past and there should be hope he can do so here as well. He won’t put up the numbers here that he did at Oklahoma simply based on the difference in system and level of competition but there are still questions about the playmakers around him.

I think everyone should be optimistic about the impact he can have but one guy doesn’t typically turn everything around in a single season on their own.

Savior? Absolutely not. Could he be the guy who changes attitudes, results, and perceptions, sort of like Marcus Lattimore did? Possibly. I don't know if Rattler has the same weight of personality that Marcus had, but he does have the talent to change things.

I think this thread is a VERY interesting discussion...

wouldn't we say Marcus was a savior for our program back in 2010 - 2012?...IF Rattler can give ANY sort of similar results, such as an SEC East title & the foundation for MULTIPLE double-digit win seasons, I'd say Rattler COULD potentially become another savior...RMO III

My OP was asking a question, so of course it’s primary intent was not to provide information.

Yes, I thought I was prepared for the stupidity of low-information replies, but even my expectations didn’t prepare me for your response.

Right. Whether he’s damaged goods or not, players/recruits of this caliber are extremely few and far between for our program. Significantly, simply having Rattler under center will get us more exposure next year. If all goes well, it could play a part in setting the table for more positive changes.

Springboard may be a better term than savior. I think he can elevate this team and help build the foundation for unseen success here if the Oline can gel and the offense remains balanced. No player will ever be the savior of the program.

I think this is the best way to look at it. It’s a chance for Satterfield to show what his offense can do. We’ll have far more eyes on us next year because of Rattler. It has a huge impact for exposure.
