It's WAAAY Past time...

That's how they justified not going to a playoff in the first place. Maybe just make other seniority bowls the venues and swap out year-to-year, etc. It would make the season a lot more enjoyable for sure. It makes me sick seeing an NFL team that is middle of the pack still have a shot at a playoff, but in College, you basically have to win every game.
Unless your Alabama. It’s not a requirement for them.

They really need to look into that basketball tournament they do then.
They need to leave them both alone. Where is it written that you need to conduct championships for two sports the same way? Besides, There's already a remedy for football that ends any supposed inequities, does not extend the playoff, and isn't complicated. All they have to do is adopt it.

But.... what about UCF? They will never get a shot at the playoffs if they stay at 4 teams

Something to be said for this ^^^^.

Let's just drop the current play-off system and go back to the old media-driven one.
Unnecessary. We've got a good system. We need a better way to feed it. Four 18-team super-conferences would do it- and no one aspiring to the CFP would duck playing in one of them. That would give you room to add Notre Dame, UCF, and six more larger football-playing schools. This would constitute your top division in college football, and everyone else would play in another division.

I could write a dissertation on a 12-team playoff. Short version:

10 conference champions plus 2 wild card teams.
Anoint 5 of the pre-Christmas bowls for the first round.
Four conferences get a first-round bye based on a rolling 5-year point system .
Second round:Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange Bowls.
So this year it would look something like this:

Wild cards are Georgia & Notre Dame.

First Round games: (1)Washington vs Fresno St-Winner plays Ohio St in Rose Bowl.
(2) Northern Illinois vs Notre Dame-winner plays Oklahoma in Fiesta Bowl
(3)UAB vs Appalachian - winner plays Bama in Sugar Bowl
(4)UCF vs Ga- winner plays Clemson in Orange Bowl

(A) Everybody has a chance.
(B) Determined by players on the field, not the media.
(C) Lots of TV money.
(D) We could have a lot of interesting OOC games instead of the cupcake schedules we have now since they wouldn't affect conference champions. Imagine starting the season with Bama playing Texas instead of Texas-San Antonio.

This preserves the traditional major bowl conference tie-ins.

Just how many games do you all want our players to play. There is no sport no physical than football. As witnessed this year, half of the defense was out with injuries. These kids go to school also and most universities today are pushing the athletes to graduate. So you want to play 4 or 5 conference games and then start playing bowl games? Which 4 or 5 are home games. Universities and the surrounding businesses would live tons of money losing home games. If we keep adding games we will have more student athletes hurt, grades will suffer and you will have athletes sitting out games. How many schools recruit good enough to have significant injuries to their players and then their good players sitting out games?

We're adding 1 or 2 more games to the current setup. I'll do that for a national championship. And we'll only add two total games; fewer marginal teams will play in a bowl. There would be more meaningful games for fans to watch.

All this sounds good and well, HOWEVER the FCS manages a 24 team playoff. Considering that FCS teams are on the same playing level in terms of scholarships and athletic ability the same concerns that are mentioned must be taken into account for their system as well. They seem to have adjusted and thrived under their system. I'm not advocating a 24 team playoff, but as we can see based on debates on this thread a 4 team playoff system may have a short life span.

not only that.... but the #1,#2 and 3 seed teams will sit their best players in either or both of the rival games and conference championship games for fear of injury that would hurt them in the playoffs

You can see the future and these unintended consequences. Very wise.

4 is as close to perfect as we’re going to get. Leave it as is.

I'm not sold on this. The backlash some coaches would face from fans and alumni alike would be deafening if they sat out their best players for the rivalry games.
Try to imagine selling that line in Columbus, Ohio, Ann Arbor, Gainesville, Tallahassee, Auburn, Tuscaloosa and so many others

It would happen. National championships trump everything else. Think Bama fans would trade last year’s trophy for a win at Auburn?

Thanks, 4 is good ..... and i also will predict the sunny will come up tomorrow... ..amazing
