No Rocket, Kennard for bowl game

People have argued about bowls being "meaningless", but opt outs have really made them that way.

I suppose on the bright side, it's a no lose situation. We win, woo hoo. We lose, it doesn't count because it wasn't our full team playing anyway.

Opportunities. I like it!

Yep, and I'm prepared to use that excuse. 😞

I guess i was saying that I always objected to labeling bowls as meaningless. For decades every bowl that didn't decide the national title was "meaningless".

It just seems like this new trend of opting out has finally made them really meaningless.

Not really the "new" way. It's been like this since the playoffs started 10 or so years ago. Playoffs have rendered these bowl games pretty meaningless to most.

Did the playoffs do that? Before the playoffs, the bowls that weren't BCS bowls were just as meaningless. Before that, the bolws that didn't have the top 1 or 2 teams were just as meaningless.

Just about every bowl has been "meaningless" since their inception.

People were not opting out of bowl games near the rate they have been since the inception of the playoffs into college football. The playoffs have definately made the all the other bowl games much more "meaningless".

I agree the opt outs are killing g the bowls, or at least enthusiasm for them.

I just don't think the playoffs caused the opt outs.

I'm not even sure I want to see some of our younger players really show out in the bowl game. It might draw attention to them from other teams and end up with them hitting the portal.

No better example than #5 UGA beating #4 FSU 63-3 in the Orange Bowl last Dec.

UGA's 1s v. FSU 2s & 3s.

42-3 at the half. 😬

Yeah, I remember watching some of that game because it was like watching a train wreck, you know a little interesting until you realize people are getting hurt really bad. I've never liked the Noles but I found myself feeling very sorry for them that day.

Guess when you hit your mid 50's everything bad seems new fangled. Another potential reason for the lack of interesting is there are way too damn many bowls these days. And one more painful reason is that back in the day, going to a bowl was such a rarity for us that it was special even if it really wasn't. We go to bowls and even win them a whole heck of a lot more often than we did in the 80's and 90's. It was the 1995 Carquest bowl we broke through in right?? Or maybe my memory is bad.

Indeed; we lost our first Bowl game in 1947, and didn’t win one until the 1995 Carquest Bowl. I was there and had tears in my eyes at game’s end….we had finally gotten the monkey off our backs. We have since won more Bowl games than lost. These days I expect us to win our Bowl games.

Car quest, yes. IIRC we were 0-8 in bowl games before that. I remember one season in the mid 80s when we had shirts printed that said “6-5 and going to a bowl!” There were very few automatic bids back then. We were independent and had to wait for a call from whatever bowl wanted to invite us. Did we play Indiana in a bowl that year? Been a while… not 100% sure.

88 liberty Bowl played Indiana. Coldest game I’ve ever been to. Dad passed earlier that year. Last game we saw together was beating UGA that year on Saturday before he passed. I’ll never forget 4:00 left and we were in control I said to Dad looks like we’ve got this. His reply, not so quick. Anything can happen. Took a few years but unfortunately I learned what he meant being a Gamecock fan long enough and you’ll learn.
