He couldn't have said anything other than they had it under control. Anything else, and absolutely panic would have set in. But meanwhile, he was slowly locking things down and preparing for the worst.
The magically disappear quote is taken out of context. That's pretty dishonest. He said “It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear from our shores, you know, it could get worse before it gets better. Could maybe go away. We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows.” He was referring to the seasonality of the virus. He wasn't downplaying the seriousness.
