My wife and I started planning a vacation for this summer and decided to head out to SoCal. Neither of us have ever spent much time there. The basic plan is to fly into LAX on 7/19, stay 3-4 days in Huntington Beach, then spend 2-3 days driving from HB toward San Diego along the CA coast, which is actually only about a 2-hour drive but we thought we’d stop in some of the huge number of beach towns along the way. We’d end the trip with 2-3 full days in San Diego. We also would be interested in taking the ferry to Santa Catalina Island from Dana Point and spending part of a day. We’ll be traveling with our two kids, 4 and 2, and already have it in mind to do a day or two in Disneyland and/or Legoland while we’re in HB. While we’re in SD, we hope to stay near Balboa Park and take the kids to the zoo and some the museums there. Does anybody have anything else to recommend doing while we’re out that way? I also wondered about Joshua Tree National Park for some hiking but it’d be a couple hours out of our way and I wasn’t sure if it was worth it.
Second question: I’m a surfer and since we’ll be around some of the best waves in the continental US on this trip, I’m planning to take a couple of boards along and get a few hours in the water. The last time I flew my boards on the airline for a surf trip, they got home to the US two days later than I did, my board bag was completely shredded, and most of the contents in them other than the surfboards themselves were missing. So I started looking at Shipskis.com to ship my boards this time instead of flying them (they will ship surfboards as well as luggage, golf clubs, etc.). The prices seem reasonable but I’m wondering if anyone on the board has ever used a service like them and how it worked out for you.
Thanks in advance!
