Just got home from work, and playing some TP. What is your favorite Tom Petty & the HB's or just Tom Petty album? , and song? And yes, you can include Mudcrutch & Willburys if like.

Hard to say for me, but album, I will go Hard Promises, or his 1st one. Song, depends on my mood, but I would say Luna, Wild One, Wildflowers, Refugee, and Louisiana Rain amoung my fav's Damn, they had a lot of great tunes. Cant believe he is gone.

Tough question, for sure. Can I vote for his greatest hits album? Lol.

Runnin' Down A Dream is hard to beat for the song. Always liked I Won't Back Down but it seemed to rise to a whole new level after 911.

Wildflowers album is one of my all time favorites. Seems like there were a bunch of good albums around the same time.

Mine is the live version of "Breakdown" The one where he shouts back to the crowd, "ya'll gonna put me out of a job". Classic.

petty is the best..... can't go wrong with any song..... trailer is a good one but Welcome to Hell is fun to sing around the old work place.

"Welcome to Hell, population me
Local attraction, the heartbreak sea
The smell in the air, of night bloom and despair
By the dry wishing well
Ah, welcome to Hell

A plain little house, on a plain little road
At the corner of Done, and Where'd It All Go?
Time crawls by, with a shudder and moan
It don't look like much
But it's a heck of home

Ah, welcome to Hell
Population two
Little old me, and the lack of you
See the hole in the bed
Where you no longer sleep
In the chamber of promises
We just couldn't keep

What ever happened to the sweet little heaven
Where we lived and loved so long?
Where in the world are the man and the woman
Who danced to their favorite song?

Gone, gone, gone to Hell
Even the devil wept
Uh, when he heard
The depth of our unhappiness
Then he dried a tear
And he sighed "Aw well
Where do you think you are boy?
Welcome to Hell"

Honestly, I've dug all of Petty's stuff. I mean the guy was a very, very wonderful musician in general. While I could indeed spend some time making a list in order of my admiration of all his "stuff", given the fact that I'm surfing with this small POS Android phone, well suffice it to say that I'm just gonna post this one just 'cause it kinda hits home...

Well, it was out in California by the San Diego sea
That was when I was taken in and it left its mark on me
Yeah, she nearly drove me crazy with all those china toys
And I know she really didn't mean a thing to those sailor boys

Louisiana rain is falling at my feet
Baby, I'm noticing the change as I move down the street
Louisiana rain is soaking through my shoes
I may never be the same when I reach Baton Rouge

South Carolina put out its arms for me
Right up until everything went black somewhere on lonely street
And it was just some mean old poison that I took up my nose
Thank God for a love that followed the angel's antidote.

JMHOFWIW Folks.

And then of course there's this one - one of the first of his tunes that really solidified my admiration of all his stuff. But when he and all the others fired-up The Traveling Wilbury's, well like I said, Tom Petty is one of the top 5 musicians when it comes to my type of preferred tuneage!

I mean the basic guitar riff in Here Comes My Girl is just fittingly catching on this one if ya catch my drift!!

Peace, Out!!

If I had to pick out 5 songs, and it`s tough, would probably go American Girl, I Won`t Back Down, You Got Lucky, Runnin` Down a Dream, Learning to Fly. Like I said, it`s hard, Just wish I had gone to see them on the last tour. Saw them years ago & they were great.

Can’t believe he’s gone, saw him years ago and was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. Such a great musician and seemed to be a really all around good guy, he will be missed. Wildflowers is one of my all-time favorites but it’s hard to pick just one. As for songs, in no particular order, Walls, Lost Highway, You Wreck Me, Wildflowers, Stories We Could Tell, and Keeping Me Alive.

The coolest Gainesville native on Earth - even surpasses ol' SOS IMHO!! =;-p

Tom is certainly Gainesville's best export ever & certainly the coolest human associated with that town! Steve played his high school ball in Tennessee so we can't let Gainesville (totally) claim him.

"Wildflowers is one of my all-time favorites but it’s hard to pick just one" That made me chuckle but i like a good unintentional pun....

Let's review.
Played with George Harrison (Beatle)
Roy Orbison (super legend)
Dylan
Prince
Jeff Lynn
Del Shannon
Lindsay Buckingham
Stevie Nicks
Eddie Vedder
Steve Winwood
The Heartbreakers
..........................
Kevin Costner in the Postman

Learning To Fly - live version. TP slows it down from the original recording giving the song an entirely new dimension and depth. Then when he starts to close the song he brings in the audience now signing lead during the chorus while he does the backup vocal.
Truly exceptional

Petty was amazing. A personal “deeper cut” favorite...

That album “long after dark” was not well thought of by the critics at the time but I have always dug it - its more of a rocker. I remember wanting a tele in the worse way back then because TP was holding one on the album cover!

Never saw him in concert, that is a bucket list item that will go unchecked.

Top 5 in no particular order:
-----------------------------------
Refugee (1st song I ever heard by him)
Here Comes My Girl
Saving Grace
Running Down a Dream
Don't Do Me Like That.

As an aside, I also loved the Traveling Wilburys. Those guys just seemed to gel.

This gets my vote as well. Rubin's production really mixes well with Tom's sound. Pun intended.
