The original was a decent car for it's time but a terrible car by today's standards. 25mpg was all you could expect, it's heater leaked gas fumes, AC was an afterthought, poor performing brakes, and it's rear weight bias made handling controversial.

Agree, not to mention the heater burned your feet while you got frostbite on your hands.

True, but they did “end” the Bug a few years before bringing back that new model, correct?
Yes. It was brought back in the age of nostalgia. But what they brought back was a plusher version than the original, plus available with lots of equipment. The first Bug I knew about had a 40 hp rear engine (up from 25 hp in the beginning, but eventually larger engines were available as an option) that two men could lift out and set on the ground. Then they came up with a "Super Beetle", which had a little more room and power - but always rear engine. Then, the bug disappeared for several years and came back in the refined front-engine form built of the "Golf" platform, the only edition most Xers and after are familiar with.
