Open date allows for some OT conversation... where did you grow up going to the beach? Many trips to Garden City as a kid. We would have a weeklong family gathering there for many years from the late 70's to early 90's. Many fond memories of Sam's Corner and the Garden City pier, pre-Hugo.

Circa 2000, we moved down the coast for vacations to Isle of Palms, and that has been great, but, but I have the fondest memories of Garden City.

The first beach was Folly. Most of the time Myrtle Beach until I was in the 12th grade. Then I worked, every summer at the Pawleys Pavilion, through college.

The family beach house on Sullivan's Island.

From the back porch through the dunes to the sand and sea.

Hugo took her away in 1989.

As young children, we thought everyone had a beach behind their house.

The best of times.

We went to a small semi-private beach off of Folly. We had to take my uncle's boat to get there. It was a good sized dune we called "the Hill"

I had never been to a crowded beach as a kid so my first experience at Va Beach when I moved here was.... eye-opening.

Been going to Edisto for a week every year since I was a baby (29 now). Wife and I got married at Cassina Point and still go with her family for a week every June. Live about 40 minutes to HHI so we go about 3-4 times a month to walk the dog on the beach.

I’m always the odd one out, this thread, and in school. Lived in PA until I was 6 and then moved to Richmond. We always went to Stone Harbor NJ (about 45 minutes south of Atlantic City) from birth until I graduated HS, and beyond. My Aunt and Uncle owned an ice cream store there that’s still in the family. Every one of my friends from 6 on did the Outer Banks. I never even went to the Outer Banks until 1997, but it’s one of my favorite beaches out there, not sure about living three year round, but wish we’d seriously considered it when my kids were younger, and my oldest wanted to. I love all SC beaches we’ve been to, but still want to hit Edisto. Been to IOP, Folly, Sullivan’s Island, HHI, of course Dirty Myrtle. Could definitely stay for good in Sullivan’s or Folly.

We went to the Isle of Palms when I was young and stayed in cinder block duplexes near where the Windjammer is today. This was probably 50 years ago. I think the name was the Sea View Motel. They had linoleum tile floors and were dumps, but we didn't know any better. Hugo killed them and now the whole island is magnificent. Today we go to Wild Dunes on IOP, but mainly in the fall and spring. It's too hot in the summer and too crowded to get into restaurants. This year, we rented a house on Sullivan's Island in November with several other couples.

Edisto. Would always look forward to a new comic book at Whaleys then general store. We’d drive through Hollywood to get there, and for a couple of years my brother had me going that Chewbacca lived in one of the small shacks, because obviously that was the town where movie stars lived.

Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head when there was one hotel and one golf course there, and Pawley's Island.

Myrtle Beach until I was about 5. My grandmother had a house that was sold in 1960. They built a hotel on the property and named it "Riptide Inn." After that it was Pawleys Island until 1968 when my parents bought a beach house at Litchfield Beach. It was sold in 1978. By then I had finished college and lived in Charleston so I was going to Folly Beach and Isle of Palms. Occasionally to Edisto Beach. The only time I went to Hilton Head was as a Boy Scout before there was any development. I remember driving across the old wooden bridge to the island and driving dirt roads to our camping spot. This was around 1965-66.

Pretty much exclusively Myrtle. Dad is a pastor. Never had much money. Definitely not enough to take a family of 6 to Myrtle. Had a friend with a church there. Dad would go to preach there sometimes. Couple in the church managed a hotel on the beach front and the church would put us up there. Great memories.

Equal parts Folly and IOP. IMO they were a little more kid friendly at the time. Folly was like being at a carnival. IOP had a pavilion with game room. Both right on the beach.

Never went to the beach before I was a soph at USC, went to OD and the Pad, saw guys and girls dancing the shag had no idea what it was then but still go there these days with my lovey and shag, great memories.

Same here regarding Garden City and Surfside. Great place for family vacation. Lots of great memories.

During first week high school guys from Easley stayed at Holman's Harbor, a few blocks down from the Chesterfield. We'd get nine or ten guys in a room and it had to be the cheapest motel in all of MB. In college it was house parties around OD. I recall dancing at the Pad with beer covering the floor

We spent a week with extended family every June in MB, a couple miles north of the Pavilion. Great memories. Before boogie boards, we surfed waves on canvas floats we rented from the lifeguard. Pavilion was the icing on the cake with rides and games, including the old quarter baseball pinball game.

As a student at USC in early 90s, we would see South Padre Island on MTV a lot, spring breakers. It looked amazing, and I had a naive notion that South Padre was much better than MB. Living in Central Texas now, we visit SPI at least once a year, not during spring break because we have young kids. SPI is fun, and offers a lot of the same beach activities as MB. Our family really enjoys visiting. It's much smaller than I ever expected. About 6 miles north to south and 1 mile east to west.

Twin Lakes campground.

Either there or French Mediterranean.

Folly Beach! "The Edge of America!"
Only 5 minutes from our home on James Island. Folly had everything! The boardwalk, the arcade, Pete's for the best hamburgers in the Lowcountry, the pier for music, Bert's corner grocery for grabbing a cold beer or two, Seller's Shelters for prom weekends, fishing, shrimping, and crabbing from the banks of the Folly River across from the Morris Island lighthouse, and you could stop by Bowen's Island on your home for a plate of the best (and cheapest) fried shrimp you ever put in your mouth.
