OT who watches Game of Thrones??

I only started watching it because my oldest son kept bugging me to lol. But he warned me to not get attached to anyone so I try to find reasons to not like the characters lol. I just finished watching all 4 seasons. When season 5 starts I will probably tape them. That also lets me fast forward thru some of the more gruesome scenes. I know you guys love that stuff but me not so much.

*GAME OF THRONE SPOILERS LIE AHEAD*

There's definitely some dramatic events to come, but there's no way HBO drags out Feast and Dance for three seasons. Those books are notoriously slow, with many characters just traveling from A to B or Dany governing in Mereen.

We are already starting to see the story unravel as certain characters are nowhere to be found... no Lady Stoneheart? What does that do to Pod and Brienne's story? And Jamie's too? Looks like Jamie is headed to Dorne, this season. Quentyn Martell has not been cast... and no sign of Griff or Young Griff, either. With three of the main characters almost caught up (the youngest Starks) we are going to start to see more HBO material made from whole-cloth instead of the story.
** MOARRRRR GAME OF THRONE SPOILERS LIE AHEAD**
Does no Lady Stoneheart mean certain characters will have to meet their end a different way? It would make no sense to deviate from the book so much as to not kill off such characters, since the show has never shied away from offing those who were destined to die. I was really hoping they'd have LS this season, and due to her physical state there'd be no need to worry about Michelle Fairley's availability for that role.

You never know, we may get LSH still. Doing it at the beginning of this season would be one heck of an opener. Maybe for the first scene? Or last scene? Fairley did say her character was really "dead," but of course, that could mean lots. You guys are right about not needing that actress, necessarily. The whole point of the character is that she is not only physically changed, but mentally and emotionally.

It's getting harder to say what is "cuttable," and what is not. Even book readers do not know how integral LSH will be to the final story... is it just a side story, or something critical to the plot? The show creators DO know the ending, so maybe they know LSH isn't that important to the main thrust... in that way much of what we see may be a spoiler. Any time the show runners kill a character that isn't dead yet in the books, it's like we know THEY know that character is not critical to the final arc.

SPOILERS BELOW!

A lot more is yet to happen in Mereen than just Daenerys governing. She is in a bad situation and there is a lot of politcs and pending war about to happen. I know a lot is supposed to happen in Dorne this season for sure. A lot happens in Kings landing with Cersei and The Tyrells. A lot happens in the Iron Isles. A lot happens in at the Wall with Stannis and Jon Snow, Mans Raydor, and Theon and the Boltons. A lot happens with Braavos and Arya. Alot happens to Brienne and Podrick BEFORE Lady Stoneheart even enters the picture. Davos has his own adventure. Sam Tarley has his quest to go on. If they aren't going to cast Connington and Griff this year they can START Tyrion's story this year and cast them next year and pick it up. They can likewise cast Quentyn Martell next year and focus on Doran, Arianne, the sandsnakes and Myrcella. I haven't heard anything about Jaime going to Dorne. I suppose he is replacing the white knight that was there to guard Myrcella if that is true. I guess that they think that won't greatly effect the final plot. There is at least two good seasons worth of material left in the books, not counting the "original scenes" I am sure they are going to add to it. There is so much to happen yet in the books I wouldn't see it as "dragging it out." It's just telling all the story and then some.

I have never even watched one scene of Game of Thrones, but have been thinking about checking it out. Are there a lot of gory scenes? If so I am going to pass because I can't handle a lot of gore.

I watched part of a Spartacus youtube video and there was so much gore in that 10 minute video I had to pass on watching anymore of Spartacus.

Oh yeah, violent in the extreme. On camera beheadings, disembowlments, the works. On the other had, the gratuitous amount of sex and nudity kind of balances things out.

I actually think all violence in film and shows should be more like GOT. I think it is incredibly dangerous and irresponsible to depict violence as cartoony and without consequence. My favorite example is always "True Lies" with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Awesome movie, but look at the violence: Tom Arnold hides his large frame behind a "yield" sign and survives direct automatic gun fire. That sort of silly violence, to me, sends the wrong message to young people who watch (and they do watch)
If we're gonna show violence, let it be like GOT or Saving Private Ryan: real consequences resulting from violence depicted on screen.

Meanwhile, you can't show nekkid humans without getting an "R!"

If you like the series, by all means read the books also. It's only about 5000 pages so bring your lunch. There are subtle differences. Does anyone believe that George R.R. Martin will ever finish writing this?

He just said in an interview that the "plan" was still on to wrap it up in two more books: Winds of Winter, A Dream of Spring. We'll see if the plan holds. I honestly worry (knock wood) about something like a Robert Jordan situation, where he dies before he finishes the books. Of course, Robert Jordan evidently had a vast amount of material left to cover. It would seem--even if it takes years to finish--that at this point Martin has basically finished plotting the second-to-last book (hopefully almost finished writing) and has a clear idea of how the last book will go.

I only started watching last year, but I was immediately pulled into the show, and have become a huge fan. I find it to be the best show on tv by a mile.

There are several things about the show that make it outstanding and entertaining. First off, I find that as the seasons have gone on, characters I loathed and despised early on transformed often into some of my favorites. The characters all have great, epic arcs that make the viewer become attached...often to be shocked when their lives are suddenly, and brutally ended. Which is the second point in its favor - the "good" guys often meet their end surprisingly and unexpectedly. Revenge is often greatly delayed, or never achieved, no instant gratification for the characters or the viewers. Many storylines go years before being explained, or loose ends tied up. It doesn't feel the need to have to explain everything immediately for the viewer.

When someone asked about gore in the show, at first I thought not really. Then as someone pointed out that there is an extreme amount, I began to realize indeed there is. It just fits so well into the show, and is necessary for the feel of the show to seem real, and you are so involved in all the many plot lines and schemes going on, that you almost don't notice it.

The best thing about it though is it is a show you can watch it over and over and be entertained every time. As well as picking up subtle hints and clues you may have missed on earlier views. The are a ton of characters, but in only 10 shows a year they have found a way to flesh them all out and make them interesting and compelling. It's a really good show, and I can't wait for the next season in two months.

There's actually a lot of theorizing around the idea that The Wall was indeed built not to protect people from White Walkers, but to keep people from meddling in White Walker business, and vice-versa... like maybe it was built mutually with the White Walkers. Martin has said pretty clearly that he didn't want to write a black/white good/evil story like Lord of the Rings. I think we'll find that the White Walkers may have some motivation and background beyond just being the bad guys... though the stories about The Long Night seem like a pretty nasty White Walker invasion.

The Long Night (Part 2).. There will be two very large battles in the beginning of WoW. The battle in Slavers Bay and Battle in the Ice (A.K.A Stannis vs the Boltons)... So the TV show may have to be drawn out to allow the books to catch up.
