The Brinkley twins, Mike Davis and Cory Boyd all worked on the punt coverage team last night and reportedly looked good doing so. One scenario is that the coverage improves significantly and they remain a part of that group long term. The other is that they show the backups how it’s done, the backups learn their lesson and it’s a short stay for the Brinkleys, Davis and Boyd.
Make no mistake, what you heard from coach Spurrier in his Tuesday press conference was legitimate concern about the play of his special teams. One way or the other, he’s going to get it corrected.
Matt Clements worked with the scout team last night, so he may not receive any reps this weekend as originally thought. That could be the best thing for him long term as he does need to add weight and get stronger to truly be ready to play receiver in the SEC.
Brian Maddox reportedly received a lot of carries in practice and it seems the coaches are preparing him for an increased workload this weekend.
Terrence Campbell worked exclusively on the offensive line last night and is still feeling his way on that side of the ball. He has the size and athleticism to be a good one, but he has a lot to learn from a technique and assignment standpoint.
Gurminder Thind received more reps with the first team than Lemuel Jeanpierre and could be headed for his first start there against S.C. State.
The focus of the defense continues to be on assignments and playing fundamentally sound and disciplined against the option offense they'll see on Saturday.
It’s becoming more and more evident that this is Blake Mitchell’s team. The offense is much crisper in practice when he’s under center.
One source was very complimentary of the talent on the scout team. When you combine those athletes with the newcomers that are already contributing to this team, the future is bright for the Gamecocks.
