Does Mcllwain get another shot at the starting job this year? I feel that his skill set is better suited for our offense, and I don't think he got a fair shot this past year. Remember, he's actually younger than Bentley, and was thrown in the fire vs better defenses before we had an established RB or any other established weapons. Bentley looked good vs really bad defenses, and looked loss against the 2 good defenses he faced. I thought Mcllwain actually looked good vs Clemson when his number was called. What do you guys think?

The main reason Bentley looked bad was the o line couldn't block! if they improve and give him time to throw...he is VERY good!

Don't get me wrong. I think Bentley is very good, and will only get better. But, I also think Mcllwain is good and should get another look. I feel he gives us another dimension when he's in the game.

I like Brandon and I hope he continues with the team, but I saw too much promise (poise, ability to make most throws, accuracy, and durability) in Jake to think he's not our clear number one guy. Barring injury and with an improved OL, I believe Jake is going win a lot of games. The Clemson game was a disaster, and I think you have to toss that performance. That's my opinion. I'm sure there are those who agree, as well as those who differ. But I think we all love the Gamecocks!

Look guys....he's basically full time baseball at this moment. That means no spring practice....no heavy lifting.....no time with your receivers.....no time learning more of the offense.

If Jake gets hurt we are in first a very long year.

Lmao

One great thing is Bentley is extremely accurate, especially with the deep ball. With the size we have coming in on the receiving side, we should be able to stretch the field great next year. This could be the most explosive offense we've ever had I f the oline comes together.

This could be interesting discussion, but the OP is clearly a troll (BigOleCockyCock. C'mon, now). Ignore his posts.

Haha, I was waiting for someone to call out my name. But I am big 6'3" 240, I've been know to be cocky, and I love my Gamecocks so I thought the name fit me perfectly.

I think Bmac will have every opportunity to beat out Bentley...do I think he will...who knows. Lets not forget Bentley has a football coach for a father, been around football all of his life had private lessons from qb specialist. I do not know if Bmac has had as much prep as Bentley. The future is a funny thing. Who knows how these two young men will develop and how thier careers will progress.

The other reasons Bentley looked bad in the Clemson game is that all the receivers were covered, and we had no running game. Not a possible win for the best QB in the country!

I was ready to write in defense of BMac in that he faced better defenses than Jake, so I looked up the numbers. Outside of UF and Clemson, this team played 1 defense in the top 60 (UGA 12th) and 2 in the top 85 (Vandy 65th). In those games, Perry played the whole UGA game and half the Vandy game.

So I would say that BMac had an equal chance at bad defenses. He had no favors with injuries, but he was not getting it done against good defensive teams but neither was Jake. The whole offensive unit must get much much better next year and it is Jake's team. I think that is without question

He "should" get another shot. Given the circumstances however, my guess is B-Mac "gets a shot", but gets moved to defense if we can develop another back-up QB. Bentley will be given all opportunities and then some. If we don't improve as a team, the look that was in Bentley's eyes will only get bigger than they got when he played against the taters, and that was not pretty. B-Mac can avoid some of that, but Bentley not so much.

I agree. I would have no problem with us playing both qbs, depending on the defense we face, as long as McIlwain can get control of his passes. As we all know, it's tough getting through a season with only 1 qb.

BM is credited in several of these posts with giving the offense a dual threat, but TBH his running skills are actually pretty pedestrian, not much better than Jakes if at all, but Bentleys passing skills are so far beyond BM's that you can't even compare the two there. If we want production from our WR's, Jake is the answer, plus with his passing threat it opens up the running game more, BM's lack of passing threat guarantees opposing D's load the box

Bmac cannot throw the ball ...when he comes in the game ,everybody knows he's running

So who are the starting wide outs this year? We will have some big receivers next year, and this might be our deepest position. Bentley will only make them better too. His ball placement will let them get up over undersized DBs.

Bmac's biggest problem was consistent accuracy. If he improves that then I agree that he is very good in this offense. The other side of that coin is that Jake has that 'it factor" that sometimes is worth a win by itself. He may already own the locker room

What's the difference between weightlifting for baseball and football?

I am not a tater, I pull for the Gamecocks since '61 when my dad first took me to see the Gamecocks play in Columbia. How about you?
Ok you win I wasn't even born until 83. I was was mostly just messing with you anyway have a good one

Sounds like if baseball works out better for him, he may drop football or vice versa-

“I’ve always wanted to play both sports. That's what I came here to do,” he said. “I committed to play both sports. As long as I can do both, I’m going to do both. Whenever one plays itself out, I feel like the decision will make itself.”

how can you look good in a 56-7 game when you are playing against the second and third teams.

"I believe Jake is going (to) win a lot of games".....why? Is he transferring to a better program?

I don't see why he wouldn't. When I played, starters were not guaranteed those positions because they were the incumbent. We went into spring practices with the mindset that there were no starters. This was at D3 level, but I can't imagine it would be too different. Coaches would miss out horribly on players if they didn't take a look at everyone.

The answer is that every position is open every year in Spring ball. Bentley will have to re-earn the starting job. McIlwain wants to be QB, but his football IQ isn't as high as Bentley's (although his actual IQ is probably higher) and BMc comes from a run-first mentality. That can change over time, but it presents a problem for which kind of offense to run.

I think Bentley is the answer for you guys at this point. Kid impressed me when I watched him considering the situation he was put into deep in the season. He made some really good decisions at time and some bad ones at times but that should get better with experience. He had two main problems that really hurt his production and really hurt your team overall. The fact your O line couldnt seem to block ANYONE at times had him running for his life was a big problem. The one nobody mentions though is the fact that your WRs couldn't catch a cold when they really needed too. I saw tons of spot on passes that would have kept drives alive and your WRs just flat out dropped the ball. We had that issue early last season and its a killer for the offense and the QB mindset. Im sure Bentley got to the point where he didnt throw to certain WRs because in his mind it was a drop waiting to happen so it limited your offense severely.

Muschamp would be crazy not to have Bentley #1 from day one and give him all the first team snaps to build timing and trust between him and your other players. Of course thats just my "tater opinion".

McIlwain should get a fair shot to win the starting job. But if he starts game1 for us next season, then it will be obvious that Muschamp did not learn a lesson from the debacle at the QB position at Florida.

I feel bad for Brandon. He was the second coming before he played a down. He can't do anything about his height and I was underwhelmed at his scrambling ability. Maybe he had the Freshman 15. If he can be what we thought he was he would make a great change up with Bentley.
