Shrine Bowl Observations ? Day Three
It was another slow day on the South Carolina practice field. No hitting and very few full practice periods. Here are my impressions:
Justice Cunningham continues to make some big plays at times. He does remind me of current Gamecock defensive lineman Nathan Pepper at the same stage. It will be interesting to see if Cunningham develops at a similar rate once reaching the college level.
Stephon Gilmore worked at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and is returning kicks and punts. There is no question which player the Sandlapper coaches have the most faith in. You just hope they aren’t over-using him at this point. I expect Gilmore to have every chance for an MVP type performance on Saturday based on the way he’s being utlizied.
Jimmy Legree has impressed in coverage and has also shown a knack for coming off the edge to block field goals, something could be valuable at Carolina.
Sam Montgomery moved a little better today than yesterday, but he’s still a ways away from full speed. It does look like he’ll be able to play in the game, but I doubt he makes the kind of impact he may have otherwise if healthy.
D.J. Swearinger seems to read every play correctly. He’s always around the ball and looks like he can’t wait to start hitting again.
Quinton Washington seems to have settled in more as the week has gone on. Overall, though, there are still a lot of issues to be worked through on the S.C. offensive line. They are still not on the same page.
Jequari Schofield had another good day. I’ll be shocked if Carolina does not offer him soon, and they have a shot if they do.
Nick Allison looks to be emerging as one of the leaders on the N.C. offense. He plays with a lot of emotion and aggressiveness and I noticed him congratulating his teammates quite a bit.
Quin Smith also looked good today with the N.C. team hitting in the morning session. He has the look of a future OLB in Columbia.
Larry Raper can definitely run, but I’m not sure about his ball skills and he had a hard time staying on his feet and fumbled multiple times. I hear Clemson is not going to take him and UNC is not going to offer. Carolina is going to find out a lot more about him before they take him as well.
Kendrick Wiggins is a receiver on the N.C. team who really caught my eye today. His only offer thus far is from East Carolina, but he could pickup a few more offers before all is said and done, assuming his academics are in order.
