A lot's been said about the basketball team's poor shooting, so I decided to take a look at it. Below you'll find complete team shooting statistics from the last three years, plus assists and turnovers just for the hell of it. Sorry if it doesn't add up right; I did my best.
Year 2PM 2PA 2P% 3PM 3PA 3P% FGM FGA FG% FTM FTA FT% AST TO
12-13 551 1204 0.458 192 598 0.321 743 1802 0.412 437 635 0.688 392 491
13-14 570 1337 0.426 195 516 0.378 765 1853 0.413 598 847 0.706 416 485
14-15 483 1063 0.454 148 510 0.290 631 1573 0.401 417 510 0.818 372 363
So, are we a worse shooting team than we were a year ago? Yes and no. We shoot better from inside the arc than last year (no doubt a result of Chat's increased productivity), but shoot dramatically worse from behind the arc. In fact, this is our worst three point shooting year since at least 02-03, when we were shooting 0.296.
So what happened? Basically, Brenton Williams left, while Thornwell and Notice had sophomore slumps (Thornwell, a major one). In 2013-2014, Brenton Williams shot 93-218 for 42.7% from three, accounting for a whopping 42% of the team's attempts and 48% of our makes. In the same year, Thornwell shot 37-100 for 37.0% and Notice shot 21-58 for 36.2%. This year, on the other hand, Thornwell is 31-119 for 26.1% and Notice is 47-149 for 33.8%.
In a nutshell, the poor shooting this year can be boiled down to losing our best three point shooter, while the two heirs apparent pulled the classic sophomore slump (especially Thornwell). That really has been the difference. In games where we make at least one third of our three point attempts, we are 8-3. In games where we fail to reach this mark, we are 6-11 (and in most of the wins we came pretty close to 33.3%).
All other areas of our game point to progress. We are superb defensively and will rebound you to death. Our assist to turnover ratio is positive for the first time since the 2007-2008 season. Even our free throw shooting is massively improved. If Thornwell and Notice return to their freshman-year form, we will have a very, very good team. But of course, that remains to be seen.
