Some in-state names to watch

I went to the Carolina Xposure Camp Saturday and saw some really good players.

Antonio Barber, a recent transfer from Rock Hill (SC) to Hough (NC) was dominant Saturday as he usually is in these camps. A longtime Tennessee commit, Barber decommitted yesterday. He worked out in South Carolina shorts Saturday. I'm not expecting an offer from the Gamecock staff at this point, but should they jump in, all indications are that there'd be major staying power here.

Some under-the-radar underclassmen guys from down on the coast to keep an eye on in the future:

Fort Dorchester's Darryle Ware is an intriguing 2020 linebacker prospect. He's listed by Rivals as a 6'2", 210-pound outside linebacker, but seeing him Saturday, I'm not sure that's the case. Simply put, Ware is huge and looks right now like a college inside linebacker. He holds an offer from Coastal and to my eye looks to be about 6'3", 230 pounds right now. He needs to work some on his footwork and pass coverage, but could be a name to watch later in the process as a run-stopping in side backer.

Socastee's JJ Jones is definitely seeing his stock rise. Socastee is a solid program that has churned out skill players in recent years (Hunter Renfrow), but Jones may one of the best. He's a two-way player, but his best potential is at receiver. He was uncoverable Saturday and earned invites to both the NBC (formerly U.S. Army) All-American Bowl Combine and Rivals Camp next month. The reason for his rise? He's grown three inches in the last few months and is now in the 6'4"-6'5" range. He holds no offers, but that should change.

A name Wes Mitchell and Chris Clark have mentioned in the past is 8th grader Raheim Jeter out of Byrnes. The dual-threat quarterback already holds an offer from Memphis and visited South Carolina on multiple occasions in the fall. I've had people tell me he might be the best player to ever come out of a Byrnes program that produced Marcus Lattimore, among others. Jeter is a national-level recruit that the Gamecocks have been all over from the start. As is customary with QB recruiting under Muschamp, the Gamecocks aren't likely to offer until Jeter plays varsity (If you'll recall, Luke Doty was not offered until the night of his first varsity start). At the very least, Jeter is a name to watch over the next few years.

Lastly, an in-state name I'd keep an eye on in regards to South Carolina:

2020 cornerback Andru Phillips out of Mauldin is my top defensive back in the state for this class. It's a down year after the 2019 class produced three SEC DBs and a number of others that ended up at smaller schools than their talent suggests (Props to schools like Wofford and Georgia State for some good evaluations). Still, Phillips holds more than a dozen offers, including 8 of the Power Five variety.

South Carolina's DB board is always fluid this time of year, but if Phillips extends his timeline and works out for the Gamecocks this summer, he's definitely a guy that could earn an offer. And much like Cam Smith last year, I expect his stock to soar as more teams take notice.
