South Carolina enters tonight with an opportunity to play its way into a postseason tournament. That single fact signals great progress for the basketball program.

You are absolutely right...was trying to approach it from a realistic standpoint. There is close to no way that South Carolina will win the SEC Tournament, but they could make a run that would get them into the NIT.

Progress maybe... But in the scheme of things, this program has consistently underachieved... Martin is no exception.. (other than McGuire years)

68-69 21-7 11-3 ACC lost to Duke in ACC tournament.
69-70 25-3 14-0 Lost to NC State in ACC Tournament 42-39 (Roach ankle).
70-71 23-6 Overall 10-4 ACC beat UNC in tournament...lost by 15 in NCAA to Penn and by 10 to Fordham (100-90),
71-72 24-5 overall out of ACC lost 92-69 to UNC beat Villanova in consolation game.
72-73 22-7 lost to Memphis 90-76 beat SW Louisiana in consolation.
73-74 22-5 lost to Furman 75-65
It was all downhill from there....Frank McGuire was a great coach and great recruiter but his teams underachieved in my opinion...coupled with the fact that only one team...the conference tournament winner...could go to the NCAA's at that time.
I edited this to add that if you will go and look at the All SEC teams and see how many of our players are on it 1st, 2nd, all Freahman, All Defense, All Scholastic and note how there is no Gamecock player on ANY of these teams you can realize just how much we have OVER achieved with this team.

True. We win six games this year compared to five last. That's undeniably better by one game.

They were 41-9 ver the acc from 69-71. The 70 team was upset in 3 over times by nc st with JR playing on a fractured foot. That team could have played for the nat champ but no where to go cause u had to to win the tourney to advance. FM is a very good coach who will build it the right way to make us proud!

Might have gone back to the NIT, but since we were hosting the NCAA Eastern regionals, we were ineligible to play in the NIT.

GA did it several years ago. It was the year the tornado hit the GA Dome, and the tournament had to be moved to GA Tech's facility. GA was at or near the bottom of the SEC, and won 4 or 5 games to take the championship and automatic NCAA Tournament bid. What year was that?

Big difference in our shot this year vs. that UGa team.....there's an NBA squad in this year's SEC tourney.

Coach Martin is definately the man for the job. The only way anyone couldn't see lot of progress with his teams don't know much about basketball.
