Students not attending college football games. I've seen two different reports

For the record, I'm 35, married for a decade, have 3 children, a postgraduate degree, a stable job and make good money, active in my church and community, and also starting my own company on the side.

Most of my friends who are my age or younger are busting their tails to make it in this world.

Prior generations have allowed the cost of living and education to go through the roof and have had no backbone to stand up to politicians (in both parties) who kick the debt can down the proverbial road. We have allowed the cost of education to hamstring our nation to the point that people are struggling to survive. Most people cannot afford to pay their student loans, eat, and have a mortgage.

Are there losers in my generation that have no perception of hard work and would rather sit around and smoke weed with little ambition, absolutely. However, every generation has had this dynamic. Remember the Hippie movement.

Bottom line is that if you don't like the way kids behave today, you need to look at the parents that raised them. Those parents probably came from the same generation as many of you who are posting in this thread bashing millenials.

All of that said, looking back on my life during college, I definitely didn't have it all together. It took God's grace, the right woman, and time for me to mature into a functioning member of society.

No need to bash 20 year olds. They still have time to figure it out and make a difference.
All I'm saying, is it really surprises me that attendance to college football games is down among students. I mean that use to be the hi-lite of the fall- football games were a way of having a great time, celebrating with your friends, etc. While I got a little wild with the Wild Turkey, I always worked during my 20s and didn't depend on anyone.

Not sure why you're bringing politics or conservatives into this. Seems like the debt starting increasing $1trillion/year under our last president.
Because I wish real conservatives would get more involved. Tired of populists passing themselves off as "conservative." I believe this year was the first year that the debt is guaranteed to increase $1 trillion dollars per year from here on out....without some pretty drastic measures being taken.

Speed up the printing presses.:rolleyes::(

Attendance is down because why pay $100+ for tickets, another $50 for beer and snacks , another $20 for parking etc etc . Spending $200 + a weekend especially when your team isn’t that good or entertaining is not worth it . Attendance isn’t down in Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge , Athens , or Clemson . Just saying . I can spend $25 and have all the beer I can drink and steaks on the Grill and sit on my nice sofa in the AC and get a birds eye view on my Monster HD flat screen . If I gotta take a leak I get up and walk 10 feet . Hell, I watched a few games this year on my phone in the Gulf of Mexico between Amberjack and Grouper bites . Technology has changed everything . It has nothing to do with generations or kids or blah blah blah , It’s all about value and convenience . I can watch any game in America on my phone or sitting on my Recliner on TV for free . That $200 dollars I save a weekend puts a lot of gas in the boat and beer in the cooler . Now on the flipside , if we are competing for titles or championships that’s a different story .

$22 trillion and climbing at a rate of one trillion a year with no end in sight. There are no true fiscal conservatives anymore.....just a bunch of damned social/cultural conservatives who want to tell everyone how to live.
Holy cow...we are in agreement 100% lol

I think there are many issues with the Millennial generation, and I think life experiences are much different now, but I will say, I'm never too impressed with the people that bitch and moan about Millennials. These people seem to think knowing how to drive a manual transmission is a value that will keep this country moving forward. So maybe Millennials (again, this refers to people between 23-38) spend too much time on Instagram, but they don't eat at crappy chain restaurants, are more educated than any generation, and in my opinion, have their priorities in order compared to previous generations. I would just embrace it and move forward. Being guarded and stubborn is not good for any age.

I haven't read this whole thread. but I'm sure it has turned into a contest of rags-to-riches stories.

Agree with most of what you are saying. But my question goes back to why is attendance down with college students that live on campus? And according to the reports I've heard/read it pretty much across the country.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everything should be the same as it was when I was born and I would not want it to be that way. This is the best time of my life, I get to do anything and go anywhere that I want.

talk about millennial's not attending college football games nearly as often as their predecessors. I briefly heard Paul Finebaum discuss it on his show and recently read an article saying the same thing.

What's wrong with those millennial's? I personally think the millennial's are the laziest generation in the history of America.

I agree - why, when I was their age, I would walk ten miles barefoot, in driving snow and over mountains, to go see my beloved Gamecocks at Williams-Brice.

Today these kids don't have to go to game to see their Gamecocks play, or resign themselves to listening to a scratchy, static-y radio broadcast, or just read about it in the Sunday newspaper. Kids from those days would love to go to the actual games.

Now, kids have 6-foot high-definition TVs broadcasting the games right into their faces while they stretch out on their sofas and scarf down cheese twists and mountain dews. Why bother to go??

Why bother to go? To see the action live, it's just more fun. Again, I'm talking about reports talking about attendance being down across the nation for most college football games.

Fine, if they don't want to attend the games in person that is okay. No crime, no sin, it's cool1

End of story for my part!

I agree: I love the whole thing - the tailgating, the game, and going for a nice meal afterwards if the game didn't end too late.

I'm just saying there are more conveniences for kids growing up today, that give them access to college and professional sports, that didn't exist before. They just don't realize what they are missing....

I also think college sports are pricing themselves out to the point of strangulation. Universities are pushing it to the level of asphyxiation just to squeeze out those last extra dollars....

I must admit you are correct, but all I'm saying, regardless of the generation, students in grades 1- college are lazy and feel entitled.
Entitled - Perhaps
Lazy - Absolutely not. Have you seen the schedules most college students keep these days? They are a helluva lot more busy that I was in school. The academic rigor is much tougher and they are involved in more organized activities and leadership experiences. The average college grad's resume these days would blow previous generations out of the water. I should know because I've been interviewing college grads for the past 26 years. They are MUCH more involved now than they were years ago.

When colleges bring in foreign students, most are not interested in American football. Does USC have more foreign students now than in the past?

I have a feeling you don't know what socialism is. Every heard of public roads? Public schools? The police department? Fire department? Want to get rid of all of those?

Yes, I very much know what Socialism is and it has deep roots in our society. However, I don't want those roots to get any deeper. Ever hear of Venezuela?

There are some things we have to have, like the things you mentioned above, I don't mind paying taxes for those things but I don't want to support some of my lazy cousins that have no excuse to work except they are just too lazy.

I remember when I was growing up it was almost impossible to see a Carolina game televised. To see the game you almost had to go so see it . Now you can choose which channel or broadcast you want to watch it from . As for students let’s be real ... they are going to the games to party and meet girls or guys . Trust me ... my senior year was the 0-11 year . I went to every game and most of the time I left after to first quarter to chase girls at Talley-Ho . A lot of us did the same . I think a lot of students just follow the crowds and if their friends are going to a packed sports bar or house party then that’s where they will be . Also , I think a lot of it has to do with the success of the program . This year the UGA game was packed out but after that drubbing the buzz kinda petered out . I think the study’s are accurate but go to Baton Rouge on a Sat ... it’s a madhouse . Same in Tuscaloosa . I guarantee if we are in the top 10 next year (after we find Unicorns on the Moon) then it would be a different narrative . I would be very interested to see if attendance is down on the campuses of the Elite Top 10 Schools across the board . Would be interesting .

I think things have changed all over. I am often surprused watching games on TV in Baton Rouge, Auburn, Florida, Clemson, Tennessee and seeing lots of empty upper level seats for average games. Attendance across the board is down.....thats a fact. And it certainly isn't the fault of college students.

I cannot blame anyone (young or old) for not attending the following this season:

Georgia—hotter than 200 hells. I literally had a heat stroke and re evaluated my decisions to go.
Missouri—Hurricane game
Akron—Hurricane part 2 after a Clemson loss

Can you link some of these reports you are reading that blame the decrease in college football attendance on students? I don't buy it. I think Carolina allocates more students tickets today than they did 10 years ago. For average games in WB, the empty seats are in the upper decks where not many students sit. One element is that SEC teams used to travel with large crowds to road games. That doesnt really happen anymore. Years ago, UF, UT etc would bring 10,000 fans to WB. They don't anymore. We probably don't travel as well as we used to either.
