Tar Heels of Un-Carolina Favored

Yes, been a wild, up and down year for the Heels to say the least. Lost too much last year to be ranked so high at the start of the year. UNC defense sucks as well, so whoever makes a stop or two in the game may come out on top in this one.

Had 18 returning starters with a preseason Heisman candidate at qb. With all that Mack Brown and company turned in one of the worst coaching performances in College this year.

Stateline, maybe so but with 4 of their offensive stars going to the NFL that accounted for over 4000 yards of offense last year......UNC has struggled to replace that this season.

The basketball school will get about 35 points, I have no idea how many our prolific offense will score.

My feeling is that I stock up the bar for the game. I have no confidence in our offense's ability to score enough to win
I certainly understand your thoughts. I've been very clear that we need to usher a couple of coaches from the offensive staff out the door, regardless of how the bowl game goes. My hope is that the offensive staff will be better prepared with the extra time to prepare, as they were with the extra week to get ready for Florida. Having said that, I will keep my buddy Jack Daniels near by.

We have the number 43 defense in the country out of 130 teams. We are tied at number 6 in the country for defensive touchdowns. We are tied at number 12 in the country for turnovers gained. What do you think?
#43 defense?! I wouldn't call that a "good" defense. Not many would.

No we don't. The run defense is terrible. We are one of the worst tackling teams in the SEC. We are not capable of defending against a team with a good mobile QB.
I don't disagree about the rushing defense. I don't know how to measure tackling. But, here is what I do know: in addition to the stats I mentioned above, we are 48th in "Scoring Defense", which again is out of 130 teams. So, even with a poor rushing defense, the defense as a whole is getting the job done. And that's without help from the offense which gained the lowest number of yards since 2005. If we had just a decent offense, that would have helped the "rushing defense".

Do you guys have any important players sitting out as far as you know? I know it is early for that kind of info. Just checking. Maybe someone who MIGHT sit out? We'll take the help

I understand that. And that's why I included "out of 130 teams". In comparison to the number of teams in the country, yes, I would say that's good. Think of it this way: if you are going to grade it: A, B, C, D or F, you need to be in the 2nd quintile in order to get a "B" grade. That would mean that the defense cannot be any worse than 52nd. Thus at #43 they would be in that 2nd quintile.

Good points @gamecock stock
Seems to me our Defense usually looks good right up until we look terrible and I throw something....lol.
Nothing on our team is consistent IMO. Maybe we have our best game on D!

Let me add one other thing to my prior response to you. How different would the year be if our offense finished #43 in Total Offense rather than #116? I suspect some of our fans would be saying we should sign up Beamer, Satterfield and Adkins to lifetime contracts. I'm no apologist for anyone in the program. I have been as hard on Satterfield and Adkins as anyone else here. Trust me: if I thought that the defense and those who coach it are pitiful and/or incompetent, I'd have no problem calling them out too.

I say Unc 41-10. We are not that good. They will run all over us. I see them averaging at least 7 yards a play on the ground.

It could happen. UNC has the #9 offense and #11 rushing offense in the country averaging nearly 5 1/2 yards per rush. If our offense has one of its typical days by not sustaining drives to help out the defense, it could get ugly.

What about the defense that routinely gives up 40?
UNC beats us 38-10

UNC defense gave up 375 points this year with basically every starter back. They are incapable of holding the worst offenses under 30 most games. SC doesn't have a great offense but all it takes is a pulse to score 30 on them.

The offense looked unrecognizable in the Florida game. Unfortunately, it has not looked the same since. Something about having 2 weeks to prepare made us look different. Why? I don't know. But we will have plenty of time again before playing UNC. That's why I think we could have a Florida-like game against the Tar Heels. I agree that we are not good on offense. But neither is UNC on defense. Don't be shocked if we kick their butts.
