Tar Heels of Un-Carolina Favored

Since when??
Out of 130 teams, our defense ranks 43rd in Total Defense. We are 48th in points allowed, 6th in touchdowns scored by the defense, and 12th in turnovers gained. All that was accomplished with practically ZERO help from an offense that is 116th in the nation in Total Offense. Maybe that's why our Defensive Coordinator, Clayton White was nominated for the 2021 Frank Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistants.

I am as critical as anyone of our Offensive Coordinator Marcus Satterfield. But, we have a gem of a Defensive Coordinator. If we had just a decent offense, we would have produced even better defensive stats. I believe that the pitifulness of our offense is obscuring just how good our defense has been. East Carolina, Troy, Vanderbilt and Auburn scored just 17. 14, 20 and 17 points respectively, which we won by only 3,9, 1 and 4 points respectively. I do believe that the defense did not play well against Missouri, which we had a chance to win on the road. BUT, If it wasn't for the defense, we would have won just a couple of games. So, yes, we have a good defense. We have had it this year.

I don't disagree about the rushing defense. I don't know how to measure tackling. But, here is what I do know: in addition to the stats I mentioned above, we are 48th in "Scoring Defense", which again is out of 130 teams. So, even with a poor rushing defense, the defense as a whole is getting the job done. And that's without help from the offense which gained the lowest number of yards since 2005. If we had just a decent offense, that would have helped the "rushing defense".
So I take from that our defense doesn't suck as bad as our offense. But neither is good.

Defense would be even better if they had some help from the offense..
It's amazing that our defense is among the top third of all 130 FBS teams. They have overachieved. I can only imagine how much better they would be if they had an offense that was as good as they are to provide support. We might then be talking about a great defense.

As far as this game goes, I’d like to see a team that looks like they want to win. That’s telling about the individual players but also the coaches. IMHO, CSB and his coaches will do their parts. I’d like to see the team win and have fun doing it. Recruits will come.

Even if Howell doesn't play I still can't see us generating enough Offense to win this game. If Howell plays, Good night sweet Prince.

Had 18 returning starters with a preseason Heisman candidate at qb. With all that Mack Brown and company turned in one of the worst coaching performances in College this year.
Hmm...so you are basing this off what exactly? Their W/L record only? If so, then you are selling Mack's staff short. Last time I looked, football consists of an offense, defense, and special teams.

They ranked #9 in the nation in Total Offense and #17 in the nation in Scoring Offense at 36.4 Points Per Game. So, the offense certainly did their job.

They ranked 87th in the nation in Total Defense, but a review of their depth chart shows 13 FR/So and 3 transfers dotting their 2 deep. So, that tells me they were extremely young and had to replace a ton of players off last year's team.

18 Starters is HUGE..

Howell will give us heartburn. I don't think we can stop them. We'll have to find some offense.

Hit their QB hard and he will shy away from making dangerous plays and think about which NFL team will draft him. All legal, of course 😇

So how do you explain taters having a great D and a crappy offense? UGA doesn’t have a great offense but they have a great defense. We don’t have the personnel yet to be a great D, much better coaching but to be great on D we need better talent and depth, ThatS true for any great defense.

I agree that we don't. Truthfully, beyond our defensive line, the talent and depth of our defense is not good. That makes being in the Top 1/3 of all FBS teams even more astonishing.

Don't have a good feeling about our D stopping them especially with Howell in the game. I think he'll be extra motivated to bookend his career with wins against us.

But, I'll give him credit for this Tweet...not bad 😂

The guys taken some hits this year for sure, check out some of the runs starting at the 2 minute mark. He rarely slides, although with his NFL career looming, he may try to stay in the pocket more and slide in this game. Also around the 4:50 mark, he has some amazing runs against Wake.

That’s not fair. The receivers can catch the ball. Ha

He looks like a bad matchup for us.

He‘s a good qb, for sure. I remember his recruitment and my disappointment that he didn’t come here. I watched them play wake and the golden domers. He played well in both games. Downs and Chandler are good as well. I haven’t heard much about how JJ Jones has done this season, but I know he’s a freshman. Another guy I wish had been a Gamecock. Looks like the Gamecocks defense has their hands full in this one. I hope we can find some offense.

We have the number 43 defense in the country out of 130 teams. We are tied at number 6 in the country for defensive touchdowns. We are tied at number 12 in the country for turnovers gained. What do you think?
I’m focusing on our D-line where we’re supposedly pretty good talent wise. Maybe they’re guys who’ll be better in the NFL? I just haven’t seen a lot of consistent high 4 and 5 star plays. Sure, one of them flashes every now and then, but that’s it.

Well, one thing is hard to deny: the defense is overachieving. Overall, we lack talent and depth in the defense. There's a reason why our DC Clayton White is a "Frank Broyles" nominee for being the best assistant coach in the nation.

Howell on why he is playing, guy is a true football player!!!

“Honestly, it wasn’t really a decision to be made when it came down to playing in the bowl game,” he said. “I just love this team. I love playing football, that’s the main thing. I love this sport. So it wouldn't sit right for me to not play in the bowl game.”

When asked if this was a way of him showing NFL scouts and general managers his toughness and the kind of player he is by not opting out (he has yet to officially declare for the NFL draft), Howell said that’s certainly one way to look at it. But it’s not why he made the decision.

"The reality of it is I am here for my team,” Howell said. “I'm not doing this just because I want to show people that that's what I'm about. That's just truly who I am. I pride myself on being a good teammate and always being here for these guys. It just wouldn't sit right for me to give up on the season no matter what's at stake.”

You can talk about building a culture all day long but this is an example of it through and through.
