That last play was NOT set up well at all. Just too much dribbling

Can't believe we did not go inside, maybe get fouled at least?

I agree. They passed it around the edge like they had 60 seconds . . .

To score, but I'm not complaining. Make some more FT's and we're playing in the big one tomorrow night.

IMO the team that 'lucked out' tonight was UCONN. they will hammer ND.

After Coates, I believe, set the screen for Mitchell going left, she was wide open just above the FT line. The nearest defender was packed in the lane 8 feet away.

Gotta tip the hat to Notre Dame on that one. I'm sure they were told in the huddle that Mitchell was gonna get the ball & don't even let her see the basket....& if we passed it in the paint, to foul like there's no tomorrow.

You have to credit Notre Dame, they stopped her from driving and swatted her pass attempt back in her face.

Great season and they fought hard. Everyone figured Mitchell would get the ball but it would have been a perfect time to use her as a decoy in some way. ND was not going to let her win the game.

around outside the perimeter when they should have been looking for a way to get the ball in closer. Oh well.
In hindsight that's easy to say. Mitchell is our best one on one offensive player and it's understandable to put the ball in her hands and let her try to make a play. It wouldn't feel as bad if she would have got some kind of halfway decent look at the basket instead of a desperation heave.

I agree she was a big reason they went as far as they did but based on how ND was defending her, it was obvious they knew who was going to get the ball as she could not get open. I would have inbounded it to her and or set a pick for someone else that they would not have been keying on so much. Regardless of all that, hindsight is 20/20 and they had a great season and have a lot to be proud of. Next year they may be even better.

At least she got the ball in the air. I remember in the old Dave Odom days, we could rarely even do that in the final seconds.

We had some nice finishes during the Eddie Fogler years. I remember one season when they were being referred to as the cardiac kids because of their ability to close out close games.

In the '97 season, I recall about 4 buzzer beaters. I think Melvin Watson was responsible for all of 'em.

Hearing the post game interviews from coaches etc, it made sense to put the ball in Mitchell's hands. She won the last two games for SC. ND did a good job of cutting off the angles so she couldn't penetrate and dump it off. When she did try to dump it off to WIlson at the foul line, ND blocked the pass and one of their players made a smart play by keeping it from going out of bounds, forcing Mitchell into a bad shot. To me it was just great execution by ND.

As for the foul shooting, free throws won the game vs. Florida State and earlier in the tournament Coates went 10-for-10 from the line. She was shooting over 70% on the season but I think she was 0-5 vs ND. Just one of those nights.

Great season though. Those kids played hard. Have to respect the effort and how much it meant to them. Class act by ND's players too to come over and console Welch and Mitchell. As opposed to the UK men's player who disrespected his opponent in the press conference with a stupid slur. The guys should take a lessone from the women on what sportsmanship is all about.

Exactly!!

Our Coach is not dumb, our player(s) are not selfish, ND simply made a series of outstanding plays at the end. You have to tip your hat to them.

You're going back to my pre-SC days, old timers! j/k. I was still living in Indiana through Fogler's tenure, and didn't know much if anything about the gamecocks til I moved here in 10th grade.
