The Honey Comb Dorms at USC

I lived in the honey combs during summer of ‘66. Can’t remember the letter on the building. Great fun.

I lived in 'K' ('63-'67) which was next to 'J'. It was luxury digs compared to 'J' - each room in 'K' had a wall phone and the dorm was air-conditioned! It was close to Marion Lassiter's Kollege Korner restaurant and the Opus Lounge.

'K' dorm was later renamed Douglas.
Opus Lounge.:) only knew on rosewood

2nd floor LaBorde 1980. Still remember coming back after a weekend trip home and they had turned on the heat for the first time that Winter. It was so hot I didn't sleep the whole night. The next day I bought some aluminum foil and pulled the register out of the wall and completely covered it then put it back in. The little bit of heat that got around the foil was enough to keep it warm. Oh and for me, it was Stuffy's. Still the best subs I've ever had.

Moore dorm 81-83 , I could go on all day but here's a few memories- the introduction to the concept of a "hall shower", turning on the light at the hall bath & seeing gazillion roaches scrambling around, the smell of piss/vomit/stale beer all in one sniff, dilapidated elevators that somehow apparently passed inspection .......and I wouldn't have traded those days for the world!

Douglas 1979. Bottle rockets and porno films shown via a projector on the opposing walls. Elevators knee deep in beer cans , trash and puke every weekend

I lived in Burney in 1971-72 year
I lived in in Moore in 72-73, another honeycoomb, like Burney
As a Jr., I lived on the Horseshoe
As a Sr., An Apartment on S. Saluda Street.

Douglas 4th Floor ‘90-91 (Faced S. Main and the 4 AM Garbage Trucks!)
Maxcy 1st Floor ‘91-92 (No A/C, but a HUGE corner room!)
Woodrow 1st floor ‘92-‘94 (Apartment-style was awesome!)
Cornell Arms Fall of ‘95 while student teaching (Pat Conroy’s brother jumped off top my 1st night there!)
Enjoyed all of them!
Still can’t get stench of Douglas elevators and hall bathroom out of my nostrils - so heinous, esp. on weekends! My Dad almost gagged when he walked into the loo one Sunday AM before picking me up!

Preston for my freshman year, then off campus.

At the time, didn't realize how good it was.

Realization kicked in when my son moved in to Bates Ghetto in 2013.

Moved him out after one semester.

Disgusting shit hole.

Go UofSC !!!

Anyone remember when they tear gassed the Honey Combs during demonstrations/march up Main St, Fonda on Campus, etc? IF you left the dorm to escape the gas you were subject to arrest.....crazy times.
Big Bird, Varsity Billiards provided the daily meals, pool, and pinball.

I was in L - LaBorde 69-70. "Riot Patrol" came in M (Moore?) the night of the tear gas with their badges taped over so they couldn't be ID'd and were popping students on the head with their billy sticks. The Honeycomb block of Sumter Street was covered with glass from broken bottles the next morning. I think that block of Sumter is closed to traffic now.

I remember the Dorm L resident manager got beat up by two of my roommate’s home town buddies in for a Visit in the 62-63 year. They introduced themselves by rollling a large metal trash can down our hall to our room around midnight. Yes, liquor was involved.

When the Resident manager tried to intervene when the two guys were leaving the building, a nasty fight ensued. The rm come up to our room and he was a bloody mess.

The next morning I had the Dean of Students.in our room wanting to know what the hell happened. What an honor. I’m just glad I hadn’t go out with those idiots.

5th floor Moore 79-80. First memories are of the RA washing his bong out in the sink. Huge snowstorm that year created sheet of snow and ice on I believe it is Sumter street. Of course frats on one side and all the Towers/independents on the other side and as cars would slowly come down the street all hell broke loose with snowballs pelting the car from both sides of the street. Like 200 people on each side throwing snowballs at the cars as they came slowly down the street. It was something to behold. Then some smart guy would stop his car and get out to address the mob and maybe try to chase 1 or 2 only to be unmercifully pelted with snowballs until finally getting back in vehicle which was still being overwhelmingly pelted non stop until they could get past the red light. On that day the Greeks and Independents got along fantastic.
Days to remember, lol

Laborde freshman year 1st floor at that 1976, oh yeah therefore, no balcony, but all my friends had balconies, LOL

oh yes, the Big Bird. You did not want to order your french fries right after they cooked fish in the same oil......anyone remember DSP (Down Stairs Plaza) ?

I lived in Douglas for around 2 weeks in fall, 1972. I was a freshman. My roommate was a stoner whose girlfriend basically moved in. I begged the housing people and they moved me to Moore. An upperclassman had lost his roommate. He and his friends in the next room were great guys. One of my best friends moved on campus in spring of 1973, and we lived in Moore for a year and a half. Then we moved out to the newly opened Bates West.

I actually liked the Honeycombs. They were awful, but they were homey.

Corner room grad floor of M ( corner of S.Main and Blossom 67-69 ). Only floor in the Honeycombs with garnet carpet. Cafeteria on ground floor, pool halls, Kollege Korner and Big Bird across the street. Coming from Wofford's spartan campus I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

While the Honeycombs were being demolished I paid a Mexican worker $10 for two veil blocks. If those blocks could only talk.

You can drive through it. I do all the time. Devine between the dorms and the Science School is blocked now. Also, Greene Street (from TCL to Women's Quad) is closed to traffic 24/7 now; whereas, it used to only be closed 8-5 M-F.

I lived in Snowden, 4th floor, my freshman year...'84. Hated EVERY SECOND of that place and moved to the fraternity quad the next year!

75-76 Bates
76-77 LaBorde - we often left the sliding door open and a squirrel once came in.
Summer 77 Snowden
Fall 77 for 2 weeks Douglas then Preston the rest of the school year. My bathroom was right above the main door. Preston now has AC!
Off Campus the remainder

Who on this board lived in those dorms? I spent my freshman and sophomore years, 1962-1964, in building J. In those days a lot of the football players lived in those dorms. The "ole Chilli Pot cafe across the road was a unique place. It would take a clothes washing to get the smell of that place from my clothes, but the hot dogs were great! Great memories!!!

My first experience with the Honey Combs was in my senior year at Parker High School in Greenville. One of my good friends was in his freshman year at USC and lived in J dorm. During my visit to see the campus I visited him and saw J for the first time. During those days the dorm was still new enough that it was still looked sort of decent. I still remember not being very impressed with the lobby area and the smell. The rooms were in good shape. Great memories! But, those years have gone by too fast!!!
