With the lowest payroll in Major League Baseball, and the loss of their top three players from the previous season, the Moneyball method provided the Oakland A's 1st place in their division. Even though the New York Yankees had the highest payroll in baseball, the lowly A's tied with them for the most wins in MLB. They did not make it to the World Series, but the Moneyball approach made a lasting impact on MLB. Two years later the Boston Red Sox using the Moneyball system won their first World Series since 1918. A number of teams adopted this method. The problem with that is, the more teams that are using the method the more the method gets watered down due to the limited number of overlooked players.
