Some fools got my original thread back in October closed because they were bickering on page 3. So let me state it again....
I never understood why so many on here were clamoring for the (playoff) system. It will never matter to us. Instead, we'll just sit around watching Bama and Clemson play extra games. smh
Personally, I think the OP is correct. The playoff system DOES benefit Clemson (and the ACC, and the PAC14, and frankly any school not in the SEC or BIG). Those two conferences get the benefit of the doubt in most situations
and that has been earned by decades of fielding good teams. That doesn't mean that they are the best THIS year though. The playoffs were designed to create a NC game where the two best teams are playing. As the OP pointed
out, this year, those two teams would have been Bama and OSU. Clemson (and Washington) would have been on the outside looking in. But the BCS got ditched PRECICELY because of this. I don't think that anyone can say at this
point that OSU is a better team than Clemson. IF USC (west) beats Penn State today and given Michigan's loss to FSU, a pretty good argument can be made that the best 4 teams got in. And out of those 4 teams, the best two
are playing for the NC. Mission accomplished for the Playoffs. The old BCS would have gotten it wrong.
I don't agree with the above statement that the bowls we had will be destroyed by the new system. Teams love to go bowling and fans of the teams love to watch "one more game". Meaningless bowl games were everywhere during the
BCS era (so much so that it became possible to get to a bowl with a .500 record AND NOW with a LOSING record. Sure, the stadiums aren't full, but the fans want it.
Now that being said, the OP was very clear that he wasn't interested in "getting it right" or being fair or anything like that. He was only interested in what's good for USC football. He is entirely correct.
Win or Lose next week, Dabo has (and frankly for the last month HAS HAD) a national platform to preach from and continue building Clemson's brand. This is win-win for Clemson. Bama is hands down the best
football program in the country. Everyone knows that and it's not even close. If Clemson loses... meh, no one expected us to win anyway. Dabo can hit the recruiting trail and sell "you are the missing piece".
Win and ... well, that sells itself. Neither of those situations is particularly good for USC football.
