No particularly shocking news here, other than I have not previously seen 247’s all-time rankings.

Clowney is listed as the top recruit, tied with several others with a 1.000 rating but listed as #1 among those recruits.

Of note, the list only goes back to 2000.

Still wild to think that we landed the highest rated high school player in at least the last 21 years.

Unfortunately for Clowney, that was when he peaked. I hate that he hasn't been the NFL star that his ratings promised. He has had moments, but I think he has been a bust at the #1 overall pick.

I’d say he probably peaked his sophomore year here, particularly with “the hit.” He was a beast that year. The talk coming into his senior year was about him breaking the single season sack record. He obviously came nowhere close with only 3 sacks on the year. The drop was largely attributed to him being double-teamed, which is probably somewhat true, but it makes you wonder, given his underwhelming production in the pros.

Still, it’s something to see our name atop the list of highest rated recruits.

I recall watching a number of games in his Jr. year where teams would run to the opposite side of him, a lot. He was such a force, but his stat-line production did drop. I haven't compared numbers for the other guys, but I would venture a guess that their stat-lines shot up. He never seemed to recover from his injury (knee, I think) from this rookie year. Loved to watch him play.

I thought the defensive scheme that Deke ran when he came in Clowneys junior year hurt Clowney. As I recall, and I am probably off a bit but Deke switched the DL scheme toward more of a blitzing mode. I remember a few plays where he would have Clowney blitzing inside or outside, which in my opinion hurt Clowneys effectiveness, which was to use that strength, power, and athleticism to both control/shed the blocker and basically shut down everything that came near him. When he blitzed, and this is just my opinion, his effectiveness and coverage diminished by about half. I know Clowney probably had other issues but I thought Deke’s scheme did Clowney no favors. More than any other d-lineman.

Jadeveon's production dropped off when Brad Lawing left. Has had moments in the sun in the NFL. Went to the Pro Bowl a couple years. But think I remember Steve Mariucchi saying when JD was being projected as the #1 pick that he got to coach him in the Under Armour All Star game and that he was not a type A personality like JJ Watt who at the peak of his career his motor never stopped running, He stated that JD was a "great kid," a once in a lifetime talent and could be as great in the NFL as he was motivated to be. That he did not have the natural drive to be motivated all the time because he was so talented. But if he ever made up his mind to be great had the potential to do so. It appears that Mariucchi pretty much has him pegged. In other words, never been really driven to be mean enough to play at a consistent high level in the pros. .It's not in his personality makeup to be so. Grateful he was a Gamecock though and gave us some great moments.

Agree. My earlier point. Deke came in right after Lawing left. Scheme change did not help. Not having Lawing did not help. Agree with your post.
