The last major overhaul of Social Security occurred under President Ronald Reagan with the passage of the Amendments of 1983. The two biggest changes included the introduction of the taxation of benefits for those recipients earning over select income thresholds and, secondly, the gradual increase of the full retirement age from 65 to 67 between 1983 and 2022. These changes were designed to bring in additional revenue (up to half of a person's or couple's benefits were subject to federal income tax), as well as limit lifetime benefit payouts to future generations.

Look, even Jamie Dimon is saying the tariffs will cause inflation. Arguing we didn't have inflation under Trump's first time misses the big picture. Inflation is a lagging indicator.
Secondly, it's literally impossible to replace the income tax with tariffs. The IRS taxes like 20 trillion dollars in income to get its revenue. We only take in like 3.1 trillion in imports a year. We would essentially have to tax more than 100% on items. That would make fewer people want to buy them and then even further decrease the amount of items imported.
I actually agree that our tax policy is too complicated. But, that complexity is what allows people like Musk to avoid paying income taxes. That's part of the system that isn't coming from Democrats. So your anger is misplaced.
But he didn't say that because what you're saying isn't true. Income taxes are not going to be eliminated, especially not for middle class Americans.
The tariffs are going to be used to claim they're offsetting the tax cuts for the richest Americans, but they won't do that. The tax cuts will just lead to more national debt and more need to print more money. Ultimately, hurting middle class Americans even more.
