Who watched Halftime- Thoughts?

Well, there are a lot of different types of music just like everything else. That’s good. Variety. If everybody liked the same thing we’d be no better than clones and that would be boring. But what I don’t like is the rap lovers blaring their music out of their cars at the gas stations, stop lights, etc.. I don’t blast my bluegrass so loud is gets on everybody’s nerves. I don’t hear opera or gospel blasting the neighborhoods. Just show a little courtesy. Show some and it may be returned to you.
They are teenagers and college kids, for the most part, for goodness sakes. I have stopped count on the times that teenagers, from all cultures, have done things that got on my nerves. I laugh, shake my head and keep it moving. Further, you are showing your age a bit. Kids don't blast their music in their cars as much anymore. They are usually plugged into some airpods or wireless headphones. I take it you don't have teenagers or haven't reared teenagers in awhile.

So I’m assuming you are aware of his music ability and the instruments he can play? Also are aware that most of his beats were made with instruments that he played?
What many people that are late to the party when it comes to rap is that Dr. Dre began his career in an Electro/Hip Hop group called the World Class Wrecking Crew. They were one of the first groups to merge R&B and Rap to an Electro sound. Think "Whodini" except they were singing too. Dr. Dre has like five segments to his career and this is the one that most forget unless you are really into Hip-Hop/R&B. Most people think of his beginnings with N.W.A.

You need to get out more. The music thumping loud is still there blaring out of car windows in warmer weather.

I raised three teenagers to be respectful and courteous. They still are. That is one of the many jobs of a parent. And their kids are - though it is a little early to tell how some of the younger ones will turn out.

Oh yeah. Did some crazy things as a teenager but was lucky enough to be raised in a place (farm community) where people were far and few between. I long for those days.

I guess I am more used to it than you. If music is based on a heavy bassline, you think people are going to be playing it low? I know I am getting old too. In my 50's now, but old people, boy. We always have to be complaining about something.

My 18 year old plays his bass loud in his car- not loud enough to bother someone in another car - but loud enough.

I just refuse to pay any money to let him make it any louder. He doesn't want to do that anyway.

That’s how my son does too, but he has his windows up and isn’t bothering anyone. ....and he has been warned too. Black teenager in a nice car. Police will use noise ordinance to pull you over. Just think the noise issue is not as some make it out to be.

Yep- I've told my son when he's sitting at a red light, just try to turn it down a bit not to draw attention to himself- plus- he needs to be able to hear what is happening around him with other vehicles.

I also tell him I expect him to turn it down as he pulls into the neighborhood.

Quite honestly, I don't think he has it as loud as I use to have 80s songs going when I was in high school. But the bass does travel further.

Rolling your windows does little to stop the bass boom, which is probably why he was warned.

First, you have it wrong. He was warned by me. Not the police. It’s a shame you think so negatively. My son has been driving two years, and knock on wood, hasn’t even had a speeding ticket. If you are so bothered by the bass from a kid’s stereo with the windows up, that’s a “you” problem in my opinion. The reason I tell him to keep the windows because it limits the sound projecting some.

Low frequency bass carries much further and rolled up windows does almost nothing to stop it. So, you can declare it a "you" or "me" problem with your opinion if you like, the noise ordinances and police will see it very differently, and it will have nothing to do with your "black teenager in a nice car" race card hysteria.

They don’t bother you with the windows rolled up in my experience and usually it just a precursor to get in your car if they think you are doing something else. I practice defense law so I know very well what the authorities are looking for. Guys with windows rolled down with their speakers obnoxiously blaring. Look for rolling stops too. However, for the most part, authorities could care less about a noise ordinance. It’s just a start for further investigation.

I think that is the defense attorney in you speaking. I could hear a neighbor's kid coming a mile away, even in the dead of winter with the windows up. Thankfully the HOA put an end to that.

That’s why you don’t go in neighborhoods with that. The advice DeeDave gave earlier in the thread was perfect. It’s the same thing I tell my son. I recognize that they have people out there like you that just want to rat out kids for the heck of it. Police stopping you and old people forgetting what it was to be young and ratting out kids are two different issues altogether. Like DeeDave said, I probably listened to my music louder than my son does now. In the 80’s that’s how we grew up. You probably grew up differently and loitered at fast food restaurants and plazas. So, if that bothers me, is it okay for me to call the police on your kids? No, I think we all need to have a little more grace than that. However, some people tend to think their way is the only way.

Yeah, when I'm sitting in my house listening to my windows rattle because some jackass kid can't seem to keep his radio at a reasonable volume, you are damn right I'm going to rat his disrespectful ass out. I haven't forgotten how it is to be young. I remember completely, and part of me being young was being respectful and considerate to other people.

It's all in how you are raised. Obviously, we were raised differently.

And kids hanging out at a fast food place is up to the owner of the establishment. If they are fine with it, but you don't like it, nobody gives a damn who you call.

I guess either we were all bad kids or you didn’t have a lot of friends. Everything AdCoop commented on is perfectly normal for a teenager.

I had plenty of friends, but none had the type of systems that are out now. There is a big difference between an amp and some pioneer 6X9s of my day and the insanely loud systems that can be had for relatively cheap these days. And if we would have, we wouldn't roll into a neighborhood late at night and wake everyone up with it. But if we had, it would have also been "perfectly normal" for the folks in the neighborhood to talk with the parents about it for a resolution.

And if the police, in the enforcement of those noise ordinances, happen to bust a few drunk or drugged up kids and can take them off the road, that just a bonus.

While putting together a bunch of rhymes to some canned scratchy beat with sometimes very vulgar lyrics has proven to be great entertainment and is the overwhelming choice of music listened to by todays youth. But by No means confuse it with the talent it takes to read music, actually sing ( not talk ) a song with a skilled band behind you. Lets see
Michale Buble vs Lil Baby
Aretha Franklin vs Nicki Minaj
Nat King Cole vs Kendick Lamar
Barbara Streisand vs Cardi B
Frank Sinatra vs Lil Wayne
Whitney Houston vs Megan thee Stallion
John Legend vs Young Thug
Adele vs Doja Cat
While these and many more rap/ hip hop artists are great performers and entertainers. They do not have the complete musical talent, knowledge and vocal ability to truly sing and deliver a song like those in the left column.
I do think that Drake, Beyonce and some other of todays popular artists have great vocal talent and entertaining ability, but I would not call them strictly Hip-Hop / Rappers
Well, singing and rapping are two different things. Rapping is more like poetry over music. There are rap songs that are observed in some poetry classes. It takes years to develop certain abilities in rapping like multiple syllable rhyming. Anyone can rhyme single syllable words like mad, dad, glad, and sad but it takes talent and ability to rhyme 4 and 5 syllables and still make coherent thought. I at least like knowing that they write their own lyrics. How many musicians are there out there that don't or can't write their own songs? For me, you are not an artist if you aren't the one doing the writing. You are just an entertainer or performer. That's one of the things I loved about Prince. He wrote his own music and wrote a lot of music for others.

Wow, why not throw Chopin, Beethoven and Bach in the comparison. Music evolves. In thirty years Dre, Snoop, Eminem, Nicki and others will be in the left column.
They sort of already are. There is already a lot of friction between fans of "hip-hop" and fans of modern rap. I started listening to rap from its beginning. My older cousin had the Rappers Delight album. I remember watching rappers evolve lyrically from mostly single syllable simple rhymers to these complex highly technical and often metaphorical rhymers(doesn't get much more metaphorical and technical than Aesop Rock who has the largest vocabulary of any rapper in history). It peaked and now it as regressed to a simpler form of music again. The popular artists today are very simple and often mumble out their verses.

The disrespect of loud

Just wish they’d do it without all the vulgarities.
