Thoughts on WBB game w/Duke

1. Great win but gave up a 25- point lead to escape a late surge by Duke. Bench players had way too many turnovers.

2. Fulwiley is certainly a highlight show when she’s on but good lord she’s a turnover machine when she’s not. She took some horrible high-risk shots against Duke.

3. Maddie McDaniel is the real deal. She has great judgment when handling the ball inside and outside. She’ll be a starter in the future while Fulwiley continues to come off the bench.

4. Our big, bigs are slow and ineffective in the paint. Tac is young and inexperienced so she may improve in the future. Douda is much too timid and slow in the paint. Can’t remember the other 6’5 woman’s name but she might not see any playing time this year due to her ineffective paint skills.

5. Dawn should’ve let the women shoot the 3 more. POA POA was 3 for 3 at one point and had a lot of opportunities for more shots but passed on them only to have other players make turnovers trying to get the ball inside. Tessa also had numerous opportunities but passed on them only to have a turnover when she passed the ball to someone else inside who made the turnover.

6. Great crowd!

7. Duke women can shoot the 3 at will. They are very skilled at it.

8. Looking forward to playing TCU in what may be our team’s 8th time playing Haley Van Lith.

The trending 6-foot-4, 201-pound prospect recorded 29 solo tackles, 47 overall tackles, three interceptions, and one fumble recovery for 10-0 5A Northwestern during the regular season. Meanwhile, his stock has continued to rise on the recruiting trail. South Carolina was the first Power Four program and second overall FBS program to offer him following Charlotte on June 15, 2024 after he turned in a solid camp performance on June 15.

Wake Forest, Texas A&M, Alabama, and mostly recently, West Virginia on Dec. 1, have now offered. He was in Columbia for the Gamecocks' game against Old Dominion on Aug. 31 and for the game against the Aggies on Nov. 2. He was at the Aggies' game against LSU in College Station on Oct. 26. Watkins was in the locker room after the A&M game, where he was able to get to know potential future teammates and get a better feel for the program behind the scenes.

Showing a number of Power Four traits, he is very physical, rangy, and has good technique in coverage. Watkins place well in space and has good ball skills. He has been a hybrid at Northwestern this season. Watkins has lined up as rush end and linebacker and linebacker, playing as in between the tackles and stopping the run, covering the boundary, and finishing tackles well.

Here is what he had to say about USC's 17-14 win over Clemson. "I thought it was a great win for the Gamecocks. LaNorris played amazing today. As a defensive guy, it was great to see the game end on an interception. This was a huge game for the Gamecocks, and they responded well to adversity."

105 man roster limit.

The biggest issue I have not studied enough to really grasp the effect of yet is the new Roster size rule of 105.

Right now, there are 117 players on our roster. 35 of them are SR or 5 & 6 yr. players. We have 21 commitments right now. Doing the math, that only leaves room for 2 players from the portal. Being Shane does such a great job on the portal, that makes you wonder.
How many players currently on our roster are going to go in the portal? We will never really know, but how many, might/will be, asked to go in the portal? Before when a coach had a sub-par player, he could just tell a player that he was no longer on scholarship, they could stay on the scout team, etc. Now they cannot even be on the team.
We do know Shane will want to bring in way more than 2 portal players. We also know, Shane is still trying to flip commitments from other schools. I just do not understand why NCAA is going to limit schools to 105-man roster. I know it somehow all ties in with the NIL court decisions. Maybe they figure with smaller rosters, more players may get some NIL money.
