2021-2022 WBB Team

Where do Bama's women play?

They used to play at Foster Auditorium, which was built in 1939 and is known historically for an event that took place in the 1960s:

51b78d216bb3f7cc3d000006

But it's only used for Women's Volleyball these days. The Women's Basketball program has been using Coleman Coliseum exclusively since 2016.....

I could have sworn we played them in Foster later than 16, but I as mother would claim “I must have disremembered that”

I did not know it was where Wallace barred the door, isn’t that filled with irony.

As always so glad when you dig up the facts!

Once we got good, Sylvia took her marbles and went home.
Truer words were never spoken. In fact Sylvia would never give us a home and home, only neutral sites. Wes Moore at State and Kara Lawson at Duke want the series with us. They have national aspirations and know, win or lose they benefit... exposure, competition, SOS, recruiting.

I think Courtney Banghart at UNC has gotten a roster that can be competitive and wants some better OOC games. Our contract with Duke ends with this game. We have renewed for 2 more games with State.

I think Duke renews..... but DS likes to play EVERYBODY. GaTech, VaTech, Chapel Hill would be great Home and homes. Maybe especially VaTech, newer on the national scene and they have a very talented African American coach who has paid his dues. GaTech coach Nell Fortner use to call the SEC games and is friends with DS also.

Watkins is going to make her announcement on November 17th.
In other recruiting news #2 Kiki Rice has committed to UCLA and the Bruins will clearly have the #1 class this year. 4 in the top 22 and 5 in the top 50.

PAC 12 is killing this year 7 of the top 10 and 11 of the top 22. SEC has had a down year

Watkins is the highest recruit uncommitted

For the fourth year in a row Clemson has gotten a 5* shooting guard. #15 Ruby Whitehorn joins Gabbie Elliott and Kionna Gaines in Hooterville. Danae McNeil from Swansea transferred and was not recruited by us, we took Zia.
Amanda Butler is moving them upward. They are no longer a laughingstock. They have a fairly talented 7 player rotation with 3 guards who are capable of putting up 20 any night. Not much size but they could surprise and make the tourney field

“sophomore Eniya Russell is one year removed from being a McDonald's All-American and could be the ninth-best guard on South Carolina's roster.”

wow
Russell gets no love. She's like the middle child between the straight A's older sibling and the prodigy younger sibling. I'll LMAO if she ends up surprising everyone this season.

I asked this question on an earlier thread: Anyone know why the basketballs this year are a bright orange? They look a little strange as in previous years they were more of a tan or light brown. A different manufacturer maybe?

Personally I didn't like that comment in that article. She was the lone recruit last year and unlike the 2019 class she's didn't come into a team little depth at her position and a big turnover in the off-season. I expect that we will see a sizable jump in her performance and perhaps Littleton and Amihere too.

Russell is an excellent athlete who is making the transition to becoming an excellent bb player. Dawn chose her to start the exhibition which says something.

In her playing time last year, the tendency was once the ball got in her hand it never left. That hopefully was corrected.

Last year Littleton was not recovered from surgery on both feet from her redshirt year. She is clearly much trimmer and fitter. She increased her vertical jump among other measurables in the off season. Great shooter who will be needed against zones

I have said it many times Amihere is the best athlete on the team. She has played nowhere near Her ceiling. I expect a huge leap forward this season

I noticed that too, she was still playing like she was playing high school ball where she has to do it all for the team succeed. I feared the same thing for Cooke when she first arrived and initially had fears for Rivers but she never got the playing time to work through it like Cooke did.
I'm hopeful this team could be really special and some of the less heralded players that we're discussing are a huge part of why I believe this team can take it to the next level.

In her defense, I think Russell was told to look for her shot. When Cooke was off the floor, we didn't have a many players who could create their own shot. I think coach envisioned Russell being that type of player off the bench. Unfortunately, she didn't make enough shots and her defense and ball handling were iffy at times. That happens with freshman, even talented ones.

To her credit, she could have easily transferred out. I admire her for hanging in there. Hopefully, with less pressure on her to score, Russell can just let the game come to her a bit more.

The husband/wife team is common in volleyball. The wife of USC's coach is Directory of Volleyball Operations or something similar. I think the reason is economics. A university can pay a husband and wife team less than a regular head coach and assistant.
Tenn WBB has a husband and wife combo coaching.

Gamecocks were +41 when Beal was on the floor. Don't sleep on Brea. She's the tone setter for this team.
Brea is the one opposing teams leave unguarded on offense when she is on the court. She cannot create her own shot and does not have a consistent midrange game (being kind here). She is lauded for her defense, and she is good defensively, but it should be noted she also was the primary defender against opposing players that led their team in scoring in many games last year, tourney included.
If I had to pick a player in the starting lineup to give up minutes to allow Rivers or Johnson more PT, it’s Brea. Sorry, but she is not a complete player since she is an offensive liability most of the time.
I understand the intangibles she brings to the team while on the court, not discounting that part of her game. But when you have talent like Rivers and Johnson, you must find them PT and Brea is the first of the starting five where those minutes should come from as well as the backup pt for the PG and SG.

If Beal is guarding the other's best offensive player, then, yes, that player could still lead their team in scoring. But what was it compared to her season average? And, most importantly, how many would she have scored if Beal wasn't guarding her?

Just watch Beal's defense in the 1st half against Rennia Davis. ZERO point with Beal guarding her. Beal mysteriously leaves the game in the 2nd half and Davis goes off for 24.

What other games do you have in mind? She didn't guard Bueckers because Destanni couldn't guard anyone else on UCONN. She didn't guard Haley Jones, early, because Saxton had no one else she could guard. Dawn was eventually forced to switch Brea on Jones and that was the last we heard of Jones.

As far as minutes, Henderson has certainly to drop the most of anyone. Not because she'll be playing poorly, but because we have a 2nd legit PG this season. Henderson carried a heavy load last season.

I imagine ALL the starter's minutes will be down. How many Beal's will decline, I don't know, but definitely less than Saxton's.

Beal always draws the player DS wants shut down. How she has not made all defensive team is beyond me.

We got beat last year by 5 teams that had multiple scorers who were tall SGs or SFs.
Brea won her battle others didn’t. With Hall and Rivers we have guards with the height and length to defend in those situations.

Beal posts up really well on offense. She fills the lane excellently but is not top notch finisher. Inconsistent at line and struggles with mid range. THAT WAS LAST YEAR. We never ran plays for her so breaks and O rebounds were basically the only opportunities to score AND SHE NEVER COMPLAINED, she did all the dirty work; defend, rebound, set picks, run the floor relentlessly. Everybody needs a glue girl. She is it. OUGHT TO BE FEATURED ON MIKE ROWE’S DIRTY JOBS!!!!

Let’s see what she is this year. She is will always be the 4th option. She hits midrange we are basically unstoppable, she doesn’t minutes decrease noticeably

In the final four Beal guarded Lexie Hull for the first 3 quarters with shooting record of 3-11, one of those shots was on Cooke because Beal was guarding Ana Wilson for a few plays. So she only got 2 successful shots off on Beal in 3 quarters and those shots we're both off balanced and hard to come by. Then in the 4th quarter Beal shut downs the player of the game Jones to only 4 points in the 4 quarter. She's definitely unappreciated by some for how crucial she has been to the team's success due to her lack of a strong offensive game.

This is beyond ridiculous to me, between Beal not getting any defensive honors and Henderson not making any SEC teams.

Dawn put Amihere on Horston late in that UT game, we were so short of long, athletic perimeter defenders. Like you state, the addition of Rivers and Hall is huge.

A team that beat us in possibly the ugliest game of the year between top 10 teams. We played horrible, but to be fair they helped us play horrible. We held them to 29% shooting, too bad we shot 27%
Remarkably they totally stifled our fast break offense AND made it very difficult to score in the paint in our set offense. We also went 2-12 from 3pt. Zia and Henny shot a combined 5-31 for a sizzling 16%. And just to leave no doubt in how horrible we played 4-11 from the FT line. 36% for those keeping count.
We played rushed and stupid last year. In a play that encapsulated this, Zia went 1 on 5 taking an 18 footer baseline jumper that was behind the basket! WTF, I mean WTF!

This Year
OFFENSE
NCSU is a better 3pt shooting team than Ark. They may be the best 3 point team in the country. Their top 5 shooters shot 42.5% from 3 point land. Crutchfield 47% Johnson 46% Jones 42% HELL even Cunane shoots 39% from 3.

They play a 1 in, 4 out offense. They want iso Cunane down low, this forced most teams to double and that opened up kick out threes(they space really well) or slashes to hoop weak side.

There will be no need for us to double Cunane Boston and Cardoso are big enough and good enough defenders BUT it is imperative that we run their shooters off the line. Beat us with 2s is always a DS motto.

Boyd, Jones and Turner-Brown are all 6’0” or taller and very good slashers. Good news Boyd is out, Jones is still recovering from ACL may play but will be limited
They return their top 7 players and added two top notch transfers. PG Diamond Johnson, All Big10 who averaged 17ppg and shot 45% from 3 and 90% from the stripe.

W Madison Hayes who 1st team all SEC freshman at Miss. St.

They have 6 players who averaged double figures and another who averaged 8ppg.
They are a very good shooting team 47%fg and killer from 3. Rebound well +7 but not dominant.

Besides Cunane they have 5 players over 6’ but none over 6’2”.

Boyd 6’2” is their backup C/best PF. She WILL play in the WNBA and is a handful 12&7. But WILL NOT PLAY AGAINST US

Defense

They have the length and quickness to guard us for stretches IF Cunane does not get into foul trouble. Played some man but mainly zone last year. Dared Beal and Saxton to shoot. When we shot they sent EVERYBODY to the defensive glass. Fought tooth and nail not to give up O rebounds. They uglied up the game really well.

They stifled out fast break last year by not crashing the O boards and by getting at Least 3 back as soon as shot went up

They have great depth for perimeter plays thin Down low

Keys to winning

  1. Pound the ball down low. Get Cunane in foul trouble. We got 20 bigs fouls they got 5
  2. Run when it’s there and FINISH
  3. Rebound
  4. Play smart on O, limit TOs and stupid shots
  5. Run them off the 3 pt line and limit Cunane on the low block

As always a great synopsis of the upcoming matchup. Two things I wasn't aware of, was that NC State was so short outside of Cunane and the amount of 3 point shooters was that high of a percentage. That first 15 minutes of the Benedict game does have me a little worried about our defense, but I do feel like our depth that you referenced will propel us to victory.

Two things that give me comfort about Cooke bit is that for one she seemed to have matured as the season progressed from taking as many of those extremely low percentage shots. Secondly as Dawn mentioned in one of her pressers, she says that she has 2 point guards and 6 other guards battling each other for the 2-3. So I imagine if things get crazy she won't be hesitant to sub someone in if necessary

Nice write up! What is your prediction?

Nice write up! What is your prediction?
It’s at State, sellout crowd and it’s the first game (hedging my bets) they need to shoot lights out and keep the game in the 50s low 60s. I just don’t think they can do that.

We win by 10. If we get Cunane in early foul trouble or just get rolling it could be surprisingly ugly for the Pack

We had a very young team early in the season last year and we didn't have a lot of depth, either. This year, we're laden with upperclassmen and we have a ton of depth. We could still lose to a very good NC State team on the road, but I expect us to win by 5-10.

Great Preview!

They brought in a freshman C 6-4 Sophie Hart but she is raw. With Boyd's absence she might get more minutes than she's ready for, especially if Cunane gets into foul trouble taking on Boston, Cardoso, Amihere, and Feagin by herself. Hart scored something like 2 pts shooting 1-2 in their exhibition game earlier.

Beyond her they have another reserve "Center" in Camille Hobby who is 6-1. I don't think Hobby will fare well against our bigs should she get substantial PT, and will mostly provide 5 fouls for Wes Moore. In last season's loss, 6-1 F Jones led the Wolfpack with 16 pts and 12 rebounds. 6-0 F Jakia Brown-Turner added 11 pts and also 12 boards. We must not let 6-0/6-1 players for the Pack out-position and out-rebound our 6-7/6-5/6-4 bigs in this upcoming game...

The Pack's front court is physical. Saxton was in foul trouble and only played 15 minutes last year. Just not a great matchup for her. I think we see Cardoso make an immediate impact in this game. I expect a lot of Amihere as well. We beat them on the boards by 5 last season. I think we can do better Tuesday. I'm sure Wes Moore has been challenging his team all week to compete hard on the boards. It's going to be a war.

Anyone know the reasoning behind this game starting at 5 pm instead of 7 or 8?
