Baseball is back....

I think the NLB need to take notes, now...

Anyone remember John Foster?

John Foster, a former pitcher for the Atlanta Braves who is now a coach for the CTBC Brothers, said many people outside Taiwan had never heard of its league, the Chinese Professional Baseball League, before the pandemic. Now, he said, even ESPN is showing highlights from the games, and his American friends are jealous that the Taiwan teams are able to play.

Atl, I know you probably mean well, but Taiwan is not China. (Thankfully.)
How so? I'm sure you know all about the 1949 revolution in which the Communist Chinese on the mainland forced out the Nationalist Chinese in 1949. The Nationalists escaped to the island of Formosa.

I was not a fan of Nixon opening diplomatic relations with the Communists and dropping relations with the Chinese Nationalists. But since the Communists consider the Nationalists to be a rogue state (when it's really the other way), I'm not surprised that the Communists insisted that we had to drop diplomatic relations with the Nationalists as a condition of diplomatic recognition.

Taiwan = ROC, the Republic of China.

In what way?

That could be interpreted to be insulting to Taiwanese

Since we are discussing insulting foreign countries, China Sucks, Taiwan rules!
Since most of us have it bassackwards, I believe that the Nationalist Chinese on Taiwan would probably be pleased to know that someone remembers a time when they were commonly known as Nationalist China.

Thanks, knowing your posts, I figured you had a legit take

Thank you for your kind words. I try to be even and accurate. For disagreements, I try to criticize ideas, not people. I also disdain political name calling, e.g., when the Potus made his IMO sophomoric off-the-cuff bleach remarks, the Pelosi response IMO was no better. Collaborate when possible, help each other as best we can, and when we disagree, let's do so respectfully.

That's the official name, of course, and primarily why there is an issue over UN membership for the country.

I know you mean no disrespect (in fact, you were probably giving a shout-out to Taiwan, so thanks), but tha lot of people in Taiwan who would take issue with the country being a "China." The country was under martial law for more than 30 years under the Nationalists and killed tens of thousands of people in the late 1940s. (I regret taking this thread off the topic of baseball.)

BTW, my friends in Taiwan would appreciate it if you support baseball in Taiwan!

Yes, Chaing Kai Shek (sic) was no angel. And what you write does make sense, and I thank you for that.

They want to remain a free country, but they (I assume) are ethnically Chinese?

Yes, ethnically the same as most Chinese, but a majority of the population migrated from China to Taiwan hundreds of years ago. (They have their own ugly history of suppressing the aborigines who were already on the island.) Early in the area's history, the area was under the Portuguese and Dutch (hence the name Formosa). And as you know, they were under Japanese occupation for about 50 years. (Which is why baseball is popular in Taiwan!)
