Is Blake Gideon really a ST/LB coach at South Carolina now? If so, I can tell you ... some stuff.
Have not heard of Blake Gideon, but please do go on.
Apparently Gideon was just hired by South Carolina.
He played safety at Texas under Muschamp. After he graduated he followed Muschamp to UF and worked as a defensive quality control staff member. Then he followed Muschamp to Auburn and worked as a secondary assistant coach.
Not a lot of experience, but I don't see anything negative about him.
Everyone has to start somewhere, this shows you the confidence Muschamp has in Gideon. Gideon's dad was a football HC at a big Texas high school (Leander). When Blake played safety at Texas, he had some physical limitations (speed), but was considered a coach on the field. Even when an underclassman. He had 52 consecutive starts for Texas at safety. Camped with the Broncos and Cardinals. We all assumed he would be a defensive coach some day, this is just sooner than you would expect. The guy is only 26 years old and position coaching in the SEC? Wow. I think he will be great as a coach. Respected by all his teammates and a hard worker, so don't be surprised if he turns out to be a great recruiter too.
I misunderstood your original post. The way that first post is stated I thought you were implying that there was something negative about him in some way.
I thought you were going to tell us we had another woman chaser on our hands. I thought "oh wonderful, we should rename our mascot the Jerry Springers".
Well there is a negative. A huge negative. Mention his name to a Longhorn fan and you can expect to hear an exasperated groan. One of those names you just don't want to hear again. Don't worry, it won't make him a bad coach, he may use it to be even better.
Why? We think he cost us a national championship. Think back to the 2008 season. Texas had a really good team quarterbacked by Colt McCoy, with a bunch of future NFLers like Brian Orapko. Wound up No. 4 in the nation at 12-1. Beat A&M 49-9, Arkansas 52-10, Oklahoma 45-35, Missouri 56-31, and finished beating Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. The sole loss was to Mike Leach's Texas Tech in Lubbock. Texas Tech has always been a wimp on the road, but Lubbock is a hard place to win. Texas manged to go ahead with a TD with 30 seconds to play. Tech got the ball and moved to mid field with 15 seconds left. Tech overthrows a WR and it hits the safety, Blake Gideon, right in his stomach. I mean it was drilled down the field right at a freshman safety. It hits him in the stomach and he drops it. With .02 seconds left Mike Crabtree, later a SF No.1 pick, despite tight double coverage, catches a TD to upset the Longhorns. So many, many Longhorns think he cost us a national championship game at the very least, likely more. Florida didn't look very impressive beating Oklahoma and had lost to Ole Miss, Texas played the Sooners at least as well as Florida did.

Still one of my favorites.Funny I recall Rashard Faison dropping a sure pick 6 that would have given us a 28 point lead in the Swamp back in a Lou year. Stone hands gets you put on defense in some cases. I guess that was so with Gideon.
Not too many "good hands" people get put on offense!Funny I recall Rashard Faison dropping a sure pick 6 that would have given us a 28 point lead in the Swamp back in a Lou year. Stone hands gets you put on defense in some cases. I guess that was so with Gideon.
Look, Battleship was asked and he gave the reasons why there was a negative tone to his thread regarding Gideon. He told us what the deal was and now he is getting hammered. You guys are overreacting. He was a 2 star recruit and played as a true frosh. If he had so many limitations, how the heck was he playing on a National Championship caliber team as a Freshman... Surely it couldn't have been something to the effect that either they lacked depth at that position or he was better than is being made and beat out others...
Sorry, BST, but this sounds like sour grapes over a dropped int and to pin missing a national championship on a 2 star frosh who dropped it is pretty crappy. Not saying you are doing it, but it sounds like some of your UT brethren are.

Obviously he has impressed Muschamp.
I sat right there and watched it, and after that play, Florida "swamped us". We could have won the East that day. Oh, how the Holtz era might have been transformed had that interception been caught.Funny I recall Rashard Faison dropping a sure pick 6 that would have given us a 28 point lead in the Swamp back in a Lou year. Stone hands gets you put on defense in some cases. I guess that was so with Gideon.
I was not hammering him...
I was just pointing out that it seemed pretty crappy to blame a 2 star frosh for losing a national championship, if that is hammering then we have gotten really sensitive...
I will now hold hands with you and BST and sing kumbaya.
Did I miss something on the Bill Buckner / Cubs ref or should that read BoSox fans?
Also, isn't Gideon a GA working with the Secondary and not a position coach?

A person only has so many defining moments in life. Hopefully, he might still have one or two more.
Grad assistant. Not LB coach

It's like Cubs fans toward Bill Buckner. To us it seems unfair and ridiculous. To Cubs fans, it can't be denied. The heart reacts in certain ways that can't always be justified.

Man I still remember watching that game on tv. I was living in San Antonio at the time. Great game, but a heartbreaking loss.Well there is a negative. A huge negative. Thanks Battleship TX. Always appreciate a little insight on coaches or players. Too bad about the missed INT. Sounds like UTSr. could have added another Natty had he come up with the play. Anyway, most importantly, it sounds like we got a great young coach with a coaching pedigree, a leader and coach from his days on the field, and a great young man to represent our university. All great things to hear. Hope to see UT back to great soon. Went to a couple of Red River showdowns while living in Dallas and loved it. Always wish the best for Charlie Strong too! Good luck in 2016 and thanks again for the insight.
Uh, no. Texas wasn't beating this guy in 98.
Psst. Wrong decade
Uh, no. Texas wasn't beating this guy in 98.
Remember that Bama's undefeated 98 team couldn't beat Florida minus Percy Harvin in the SECCG.
Oh, bull.
He started this thread with the ominous message:
Ooh, what skeletons does Gideon have in his closet? Was he caught with a live boy or a dead girl? Does he have a crippling addiction? Did he run a ponzi scheme? Is he wanted by the FBI? Does he hypnotize recruits to get them to sign?!
The truth is... Oh, NO! The truth is far, far more terrible than we could have imagined! In the fourth quarter of a game in his freshman year he dove for a deflected ball and was unable to make the catch. Oh, the horror! THE HORROR!
Seriously, what "stuff" did he tell us? What was the point at all? There was negative about him in the thread - you know, the thread that he started. It was the FIRST mention of Gideon on this board, and there was the implication that he had done something bad in his life or a serious problem with his character. And now it appears that he's full of crap.
I have NO problem calling him out on that, and neither should any of us.
Wow, you are a pretty negative thinker. I thought I was extremely complimentary about Gideon.
Thanks for the insights, though. Honestly. I think Gideon will be a good fit and will probably move up the ranks in the next year.
Ole Miss beat them. Colt McCoy was a lot better qb than Tebow, both in college and the pros. But whether they beat Florida or not, Blake is still blamed for missing a national championship game in many Longhorns minds, no matter how unfair that is to him. He had a great overall career at Texas.
How about the two defenders when they score against double coverage on the last play. Does anyone blame them?
