** Central Michigan graduate transfer Devonni Reed is taking an official visit to South Carolina and is confirmed to be on campus right now as I type this.
South Carolina extended an offer to the Detroit native on Monday and quickly made a move to get him on campus today.
Reed can technically take a visit right now because South Carolina is going through orientation today and tomorrow for spring semester students, which allows Reed to visit as a potential enrolling student.
From what we're told the Gamecocks are high on the 6-foot, 195-pounder and the visit speaks to his high interest as well.
Reed has also landed offers from Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Mississippi State, Coastal, Louisville, Texas and Colorado.
Reed is a highly productive highly experienced true safety who has 43 games and four total seasons under his belt with 281 tackles and 3 interceptions.
We will go into more detail if Reed ends up at South Carolina - it does set up pretty well for them right now - but the initial thought is that he is someone who could slide right into Jaylan Foster's spot while allowing the big class of freshman DBs to come along at their own pace.
** Former James Madison wide receiver Antwane Wells Jr. has emerged as the wide receiver in the transfer portal we are tracking most closely right now in terms of there being mutual interest.
Wells has only been in the portal for a little over 24 hours and already has offers from South Carolina, Auburn, North Carolina, Miami, Mississippi State and Virginia Tech.
In talking to a source close to Wells, I was told that he's still in the extremely early part of the process and is just trying to sort through what I'm sure is pretty overwhelming interest.
As a player, it's worth noting that Wells was one the best players on one of the best teams in FCS and has absolutely dominant numbers. This past season, he had 83 catches for 1,250 yards and 15 touchdowns, all JMU single-season records
The 6-foot-1, 204-pounder is clearly an FBS player who was lost in the shuffle and spent a year at Fork Union prior to arriving at JMU.
From what I understand, the Gamecocks are prioritizing him while also continuing to look for other difference makers at receiver in the portal.
** As active as the portal has been in recent days, there are still several major players out there who are rumored to enter at some point. We won't speculate on names but just let it serve as a reminder that the list of players available is always a fluid one.
** As Chris posted earlier today, quarterback signee Spencer Rattler is in town today along with his family.
Shane Beamer met them at the airport late last night and the purpose of this trip is to get everything settled for moving in for Rattler, who didn't previously visit or meet with the staff in person.
As Chris said, today and tomorrow are orientation days at South Carolina, which is what makes the visit possible.
I'm told that Rattler will be spending a portion of the day tomorrow with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Marcus Satterfield and I would imagine a big part of that will be to go over the offense.
As we've previously told you, Rattler is set to start online enrollment next week and then will physically move to Columbia at the beginning of February.
