With South Carolina's preseason camp coming to a close today, the coaches have narrowed in on a No. 2 quarterback and have decided to go with Ryan Hilinski for that job at this time.
I can confirm that the coaches have informed both Hilinski and Joyner of where they currently stand on the depth chart and that Joyner was not at Carolina's practice on Monday.
Head coach Will Muschamp spoke with Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad this week to inform him of the decision and keep him in the loop on the decision.
To be clear, even though Joyner was not at practice yesterday, he is not in the transfer portal at this time and it appears that he was given the staff's blessing to take a day off from practice after receiving the news.
As I said in our latest Carolina Confidential, Joyner had a strong day in Monday's scrimmage, but Hilinski rebounded to have a great day on Saturday. While Jake Bentley has clearly been the best quarterback on the roster (he's had a very strong close to camp in the last week or so too), Hilinski appeared to be the clear No. 2 to a couple of observers on Saturday.
We will continue to track the situation moving forward.
