"Great" actors who really can't act...

I wouldn't call Jake Bentley a great actor but he certainty struggles at acting. He does it give it the college effort.
Jack Nicholson.... he just plays himself (a jerk) in every role.
I've honestly never heard anyone call him a great actor. I think even the directors who cast him just say, "yeah, but he's good looking."
Now his jump street partner Jonah Hill getting an Academy award is an absolute sham. Putting in fake teeth and playing the same drunken idiot role you always play doesn't make you an actor.

I think you could say the same thing - not the jerk part - about Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and John Wayne. They were themselves. But they made memorable films because who they were suited the characters they played.
No disrespect intended ... I like many of John Wayne's movies, but he basically played the same character over and over again.
By the way, the best actor of all time was Jerry Lewis.

Lol, since I first saw him as Theodore “Ted” Logan in Bill and Ted, he is the stoner teenager in everything to me. Which actually improves his acting if you assume he is high on weed the whole time.

You beat me to it. I agree 100%. Same goofy expressions and delivery in every role I have seen him in. (That applies to Jack Nicholson, too.)
I've yet to see a name in this thread that anyone would consider a "great" actor. Popular, frequently-cast, fan-friendly...yes. But neither critics nor fans consider them "great".

John Wayne didnt have to act, he just played the bad ass he was.
I forgive his acting because he is one of truly nice guys in Hollywood. He’s also had a lot of heartache in his life.
Kurt Russell’s acting was so bad in Tombstone but the movie is so good. But he is very well respected as an actor...probably moreso for his vision than ability to execute that vision. I believe he was responsible for how Doc Holliday was portrayed in that one. He was also good as Captain Ron...which makes me want to start an Underrated Movie thread which Captain Ron would be right there at the top.
Audie Murphy was the real bad ass.
And he couldn't act either. But he did earn the Medal of Honor.
