1. 9️⃣3️⃣ Countdown to kickoff: 93 days!

It's now just 93 days until South Carolina kicks off its 2019 football season against North Carolina and we're going to count down the days here with you on Gamecocks Today.
Today's countdown features freshman defensive end Joseph Anderson, who wears No. 93.

A former four-star prospect from Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Oakland High, Anderson chose the Gamecocks over schools like Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Penn State, Ohio State and Tennessee. Rivals.com ranked Anderson as the No. 9 strongside defensive end and No. 102 overall prospect in the class.

An early enrollee this past semester, the 6-foot-3, 270-pounder earned the praise of Will Muschamp this spring for his natural pass-rush ability and is already third on the depth chart at defensive end.

2. What Muschamp said in Destin

Administrators and coaches from the SEC have descended on Destin, Fla., this week for the conference’s spring meetings. On Tuesday, Gamecock head football coach Will Muschamp met with the media and addressed a number of topics. Here, we’ll take a closer look at a few of Muschamp’s talking points.

With a staggering number of players in the NCAA’s transfer portal, and many yet to find a new home, Muschamp still does not foresee the number of players entering to drop.

What he said: “Probably not. Unfortunately in our society, the grass is always greener on the other side, that’s not always the case. When guys transfer, you hate to put a blanket statement on everything. When I was at the University of Florida, we had a young man from the west coast whose family went trough a lot and he came to me and said, ‘coach, I love it here but I need to get closer to home because of my family situation’ and I agreed with him. We petitioned the NCAA for immediate eligibility and he was granted it. That was a good transfer. He was contributing to our team, we didn’t want to lose him, but I totally understood the situation. You can’t just blanket statement a transfer across the board. They’re all different and happen for different reasons. There are some good situations where a young man may need a fresh start somewhere else. Sometimes it’s good and sometimes a young man can benefit from it.”

The NCAA recently announced its intentions to discuss the possibility of further compensation for players related to use of student-athlete names and likenesses. What does Muschamp think about giving players a bigger slice of the financial pie?

What he said: “I’m absolutely in support of it. I think the cost of attendance is outstanding, I think, my opinion, we can’t because of DOJ, but make that a flat rate across the board so everybody’s the same. Obviously there are some reasons you cannot. As much as we can help the players, we need to. Whatever parameters they put on that, we’ll handle that. We’ll deal with it when it comes.”

While Muschamp could not directly address the recent verbal commitment of big-time RB Marshawn Lloyd, he did say he felt good about where USC was from a recruiting standpoint at the position. He praised assistant Thomas Brown and broke down the impact of having a high-level back.

What he said: “I feel very good about where we are. I remember Thomas when he was at Tucker High school and I was recruiting Tucker High school. You go back and remember his days as a running back at Georgia, he was a blue collar, hard-nosed work ethic guy. Obviously he was talented but he had a lot of the intangible qualities you look for. I would say he’s the same as a football coach. He’s a hard-nosed tough guy who works extremely hard. He’s extremely bright, has done a really good job for us.

I think when you have a guy back there that can consistently make a guy miss or run through contact, in most situations, the defensive coordinators are going to have enough in the box to stop the run. You’ve got to have that guy that can run through contact and that can hit the home run and turn a 4-to-6 yard gain into a 60-yard gain. We haven’t done that consistently at South Carolina in my three years.”
