Mark Kingston announced this morning that James Hicks will start for the Gamecocks tomorrow in Hoover against Georgia, with Cade Austin likely to be the first man to follow him.

Hicks threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings against Georgia in the regular season, while Austin didn't pitch that weekend. Hicks has never pitched in the SEC Tournament, Austin allowed one run in 2 2/3 IP in that Tuesday game in Hoover against Florida last season.

Meanwhile Georgia has big news, as its ace Jaden Woods is back from injury after five weekends out. Woods allowed three runs in seven innings against South Carolina back on the first day of SEC play, striking out a career-high 11 batters in that game. Cole Messina and Ethan Petry hit home runs off of him in that start, though. Woods also has a career 0.00 ERA in Hoover, throwing 7 2/3 scoreless innings in two outings (one in 2021 against LSU, the other last year against Alabama).

First pitch is currently set for 10:30 a.m. on SEC Network although -- and this will come as a surprise to absolutely nobody -- there is rain in the forecast.

Funny thing is when it comes to Hicks never pitching in the SEC tournament... and I have never given it much thought until now but I guess you could say 90% of the pitchers we have had throughout our history in the SEC has never pitched in the SEC tournament. Kinda sad when you think about it.

I’m sure they will make a quick exit.

If South Carolina was fully healthy pitching, then likely that either Jones or Becker would be starting this game against Georgia. With Hall and Sanders being out this really hampers South Carolina chance to advance in the SEC tournament.

Hicks has given up a few homeruns lately, so he will need big offense support from South Carolina bats.

& we've shown that this year...recall, we swept GA earlier this year...have a little faith guy...RMO III

... because we do so well on large fields right?
Our hitters need to coat their bats with Viagra, because they've been swinging wet noodles recently. Our pitchers have been geriatric this year. Is it just bat luck or overworking our starters? We lost the kid from Notre Dame prior to the season, lost Hall, lost the freshman from Charlotte and Sanders. Our mascot is going to be Tommy John next year for baseball. Who is our "so called" pitching coach?

Based upon the OP, let's hope Hicks goes 9 innings. When I read that, I took it as Hicks or bust.

On a positive note, it is a pitcher's field. Adiquit pitching should suffice. Success at Hoover will depend on how we attack it offensively imo... mostly. We must be content with base hits and we cant be reluctant to play smallball.

Braswell, Wimmer and Messina... all fly out.
No place for that at Hoover

UGA leaves two stranded in the top of the 2nd. Seem to be doing everything they can to beat our shift. We double down on it anyway. Should be interesting.

Petry leads off the 2nd with a hit. LeCroy singles. Casas hits into a fielders choice. Base hit by Tippet. Bases loaded with one out. Brewer ks for two outs. Pitching change. Stone get two rbi's. Braswell flys out. 2-0 good guys

Hicks does good at feeding Braswell. No UGA baserunners in the 3rd.
None for us either as the top of the lineup has no luck again.

Hicks' outside pitch is spot on in the 4th inning... that and he keeps feeding Braswell. lol

Here we go again? Bottom of the 4th. LeCroy singles. Casas moves the runner over but out at first. Tippet rolls a slow one to third... safe on the corners with one out. Pitching change. Brewer bloops one to left center for an rbi. Tippet caught off 2nd base for out two... dang it. Stone walks. Runners at 1st and 2nd. Time for the top to redeem themselves.

Braswell base hits. Brewer called safe at home. Braswell gets his rbi. 4-0 good guys . Pitching change

Wimmer hits a slow roller to third but beats it out. Everyone safe. Bases loaded. Messina walks. 5-0 Gamecocks. Petry flys out to cf. That's the end of the 4th.

Hicks having a heck of a day. Messina pumping him up too. Pitch count in the upper 50s after 5.
5-0 Gamecocks

Hicks in trouble quick. Bases loaded with two outs. Pitching change. Heck of a job today going 6 and 2/3. Need to finish this for him. Austin in... catches the leg-humper looking.
5-0 Gamecocks going to the bottom of the 7th

Wimmer slow roller to 3rd and beats it out. Messina moves him over on a slow roller to short but called out at 1st. Petry intentional walks. Two on for Lecroy as he moves them over on a slow roller to the pitcher. Time to make some good contact now.

Of all the batters that have a below .200 average, Tippet must be the best in beseball. Came close with inside park homerun. Laughing at Georgia walking Casas to get to Tippet.

Another good inning by Austin.
Stone bloop hits to cf for a base hit. Braswell walks. Hornung in for Wimmer and moves the runners over... out at 1st. Pitching change. Messina has two in scoring position but hpb to load the bases for Petry. Petry sac-flies for 9-0 lead. Lecroy grounds out.
Going to the 9th

Ball Game!
9-0 Gamecocks.
Outstanding job by Hicks and Austin. Braswell had a heck of a day defensively.
Offense didn't always make good contact but got the job done. LSU (9:30 am tomorrow) and at least one other game after that coming

Happy for Austin especially. He really needed this outing, confidence booster for sure.
