We told our subscribers following Shane Beamer’s hire of defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey that he would bring some recruiting ties in the Atlanta area that could end up serving the Gamecocks well in the near future.

Today’s development is the first tangible evidence of that in Columbia, as Lindsey was the key point of contact for Griffin (Georgia) rush end Donovan Westmoreland, who flipped his commitment to South Carolina from Georgia.Mike Peterson was also highly involved and did a very good job.

Westmoreland, who’s on the cusp of four-star status from Rivals.com, is listed as an outside linebacker but profiles as an edge type player in the Gamecocks’ defensive scheme. He was one of the targets that Beamer’s staff identified shortly after arriving in Columbia, and those in the building continued working. We have been hearing for some time now that Westmoreland remained open to South Carolina’s overtures. In the last couple days, things really heated up to where a flip became imminent.

Here’s what one of Westmoreland’s high school coaches told GamecockCentral.com about his game:

“Really great kid. Still new to the position. Great get-off. Added 20 pounds of muscle this off-season. Bench went up 70 pounds, power clean is up 30 pounds, extremely high ceiling. He’s comfortable playing in space, long wingspan.”

We’ve written numerous times about how the month of June would be significant for South Carolina’s recruiting efforts, given the need to get more prospects that have never been on campus, or haven’t under the new staff, to set foot in Columbia. That definitely remains the case, with a bunch of talent set to come in on officials a couple weeks in June, plus lots of unofficials and camp workouts sandwiched in between. Yet, the Gamecock staff has managed to establish some recruiting momentum with the flip of Westmoreland and by landing QB Braden Davis before the calendar even moves into June.
