Inside the commitment: walk-on Mike Green

South Carolina picked up a big walk-on commitment Monday night from Christian Academy (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) guard Mike Green.

Green is a guy that received a lot of D1 interest, especially during his senior season when he eclipsed the 2,000 point threshold. He had a lot of interest from programs like Clemson and Stanford but he ultimately chose South Carolina with a walk-on spot.

This recruitment was a long process for Green, who had been talking to South Carolina for a few years but saw his recruitment really pick up in November and December with the Gamecocks. That's when Frank Martin and the staff really started to zero in on him and get him to campus for games.

South Carolina was very up front in the recruitment process with Green about the lack of scholarship spots at the moment but Green ultimately chose South Carolina over a lot of other interest.

I will also say this is not the typical walk-on type player to be along for the ride. Green is going in with the intention of chiseling out some playing time and making an impact at some point this season and over his career.

The coaching staff was very clear with him there's a legitimate shot Green could come in and, if he competes, earn some playing time.

And looking at his game, Green's a guy that could definitely make an impact in some capacity. Green averaged 26.5 points and 5.9 rebounds this season. He shot 59 percent from the field with an adjusted field goal percentage of 73.

He's a really good three-point shooter (54 percent) and isn't afraid to keep them flying. He shot 222 threes his senior year and 883 over his high school career.
