Football Recruiting: Class of 2010

I spoke with West Chester (OH) Lakota West TE Alex Smith earlier. He is considering himself still a soft verbal to Cincinnati. As I said a while back, I've talked with sources who don't believe he will end up there and I agree that it's likely he goes elsewhere. He wants to visit Penn State, LSU, Miami, and South Carolina. He recently visited UNC and enjoyed his time there. He still has a lot of interest in South Carolina and keeps in contact with
Eric Wolford, his recruiter, regularly. He likes how South Carolina uses the tight end and the idea of the playing in the SEC. If he does not get to Columbia this summer I think it's likely he uses one of his officials to see the Gamecocks.

I talked to Miami (FL) Booker T. Washington WR Quinton Dunbar . He is claiming 10 or 11 offers right now, with Rutgers being his most recent. He talked recently with South Carolina recruiter Jeep Hunter. He will go to Friday Night Lights and Florida is his current leader with FSU behind them. He likes South Carolina because of Steve Spurrier and what he accomplished while at Florida. He said that he would decide on Signing Day.

Daytona Beach (FL) Mainland CB O.J. Ross, who we had a story up on recently.

Got some more information on Raleigh (NC) Southeast Raleigh LB A.J. Cann contacted him recently. South Carolina has made a move, but as of now they are still not in the top group. I still believe they will not be the choice unless something changes again, and a good bit, between now and July 11.

Speaking of July 11, that is the date that Jacksonville (FL) Bishop Kenny TE Neil Basford has set up with recruiter Steve Spurrier, Jr. to take an unofficial visit to campus. The three-star prospect has USC in his top group right now along with FSU, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Arkansas, and Miami and is a guy that I believe USC can be a big factor for, especially with a good visit.

Football Recruiting: Early Looks

I heard from a source today that Myrtle Beach QB Everett Golson has told some close to him that he he is planning on turning his focus to football for the purposes of the next level. I'm not saying he's going to give up basketball, he just realizes that his best days are likely going to be on the gridiron and that is where he wants to direct his attention. This helps South Carolina; Golson really likes UNC in part because of their basketball tradition and has been hopeful that they would look at him on the hardwood. Carolina is also looking at Golson for basketball but from a football standpoint have a lot to sell him. The Gamecocks are very high on him as a signal-caller.

Norcross (GA) ATH Demetrius Alston is an intriguing prospect at 6-foot-4. He has been playing OLB in passing leagues but is a DE/LB in high school. He has family in South Carolina. USC is well aware of him; Norcross' team was at Carolina's passing league in June. He does not have a top group at the moment, but is interested in South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Wake Forest, UCF, North Carolina, and Maryland.

You have seen Lexington (SC) DB Shaq Roland from the Class of 2012 mentioned here recently. I got a chance to catch up with him and right now, South Carolina is in the lead for him in terms of football. The Gamecocks were his first early verbal offer and that stood out to him. PC is his lone offer in basketball and he hopes to gain more after playing in some tournaments this summer.

Here's an early name: The Class of 2013 has a Gamecock legacy in Ronald Millhouse, Jr. His father, Ronald Millhouse played running back for Carolina in the early 1990s. Ronald, Jr. plays receiver and cornerback for Hammond and is a rising freshman. I hear he could be transferring schools sometime soon. He is one to watch out for in the future.

Basketball Recruiting

Pembroke Pines (FL) Flanagan F Khyle Marshall from the Class of 2010 is claiming around17 offers. He does not have a top group but said that Auburn and Butler are standing out to him right now. Coach Neill Berry is recruiting for the Gamecocks and Marshall said he was a good guy. He wants to commit before the season begins. He will form a top five sometime after July and said that the Gamecocks were "up there" and could make the list. He is looking for early playing time.

2011 G Damien Leonard is one of the best overall prospects in the class. He said that he has 8 or 9 offers right now including USC. Though he has named leaders at different points in the process, he told me he is open at the moment. The biggest factors for him will be the style of play, the coaching staff, academics, and being comfortable. Mike Boynton is recruiting for Carolina. He likes the style of play and coaching staff at USC. He plans visits to Texas, Wake Forest, and Kentucky later this summer, likely in August. He will not decide until his senior season.
