IS Dawn Staley the greatest hire in the history of USC athletics?

You youngsters that didn't live through the Frank McGuire Era don't have a clue what that time was like. As great as it has been under Spurrier, nothing compares to when we were great in basketball playing in the ACC. We were bigger than the Beatles in this state.

Frank McGuire as an "Honorable Mention"? I just about spit my coffee our when I read that.

If people will step back a second, take a deep breath and write down on paper what Spurrier has brought to this athletic program nationwide, maybe some will leave the fog and begin to see things clearly.

Dawn Staley could win a NC this year.

Ray Tanner won 2 NC's

But neither compare to what Spurrier has been for the USC awareness on and off the field across the country.

Why does everyone have to "step back" and "take a deep breath" when you address them? It's a flipping conversation, not some end of days crisis. Are you looking in a mirror when you write this stuff? And FYI, it's ok if people don't agree with you, doesn't mean they're in a fog and needing to see things clearly. I think what you meant to say was "see things as you do.".

. It was a pretty great post.

In all major sports at USC only one coach has hoisted national title trophies and he did it not once but twice. Next question.

The answer is no. It isn't a major sport. Merely the most mainstream sport brought along by Title IX. USC is jumping on a winners bandwagon for now because it is new, and because the men's team is so pedestrian. But that passes. Duke drew many when their program got good, but that suport has waned. Even at Tennessee, it was more about the personality of Pat Summitt. Even before she retired, when Bruce Pearl showed up to improve the men's program the numbers started to fade for women's hoops. If winning, it is merely an ego filler for a while until something in a major sport improves and fills that gap. I mean really, no matter how good they might be, how often can you watch never ending head fakes followed by a set shot layup that hits the bottom of the rim?. You can see that at the men's church league on Monday night.

Dawn is far from peaking. I think she'll have a dynasty like Pat Summitt. Her competitive drive is second to none, which is why Spurrier admires her so much.

What SOS has done is remarkable, and Dawn Staley may end up being the greatest. But as of today, I don't understand how it can't be Ray Tanner. SOS has more "WOW" factor, sure, and is much more famous. But when the rubber meets the road, it's Tanner.
Nationally, Women's basketball is a bigger sport than college baseball and average attendance at USC now is higher for Women's basketball, too. At USC I'd say the 2 sports are even, in terms of fan interest, at the moment.

The 1950's is calling you. Hazel, is dinner ready?

Everyone's going to have their own opinion on this, and for different reasons, but for me personally, nothing in the long history of Gamecock athletics can compare to the joy and euphoria of that June night in Omaha when Whit Merrifield delivered the "line drive, base hit" to right field that delivered our first CWS title. Yes we had been very good for decades prior to that week, under Richardson, Raines, and ultimately Tanner, but he's the one who provided the talent, chemistry, and mojo to beat the best in the country at the right time. No one else has yet achieved that feat, and for that reason, to me, Ray Tanner is the greatest hire in the history of Gamecock athletics.

I still replay the video of that game against UCLA whenever we have a tough loss in any sport, just to pick me up. I may still be doing that 30 years from now, if the Lord allows me to live that long.

She is great but no.

Mike McGee was the greatest hire. He took over a train wreck and set the stage for all of the success we are having today.
He expanded WB, basketball arena plus nearly 200 (in todays dollars)in improvement to make us competitive in the SEC. Most people don't know because of Hymans BS but McGee actually completed more improvement and spent more money in equivalent dollars than Hyman did.

He also hired Lou Holtz and SOS (I know he also hired BS)
He fired Fig Newton and hired Eddie Fogler and Dave Odom (which by todays standards was a great hire.
He also hired Ray Tanner (away from NCState)
He hired Susan Walvius (which was a pretty good hire - obviously Dawn was much better).

I agree Mike McGee is very underrated for the work he did here. And part of the reason is due to Hyman throwing him under the bus at every opportunity.

Just way to early to give her that title. Not saying she won't get there, but I hope not. That means women's basketball has had more success than baseball or football.

Gotta give the title right now to Tanner. Everyone knows he was a great coach, but is also loved nationally, and I am sure will prove to be a great AD.

Gotta put Spurrier 2nd. simply for all the national exposure he has brought here (I did not forget about the 11 win seasons). Spurrier also gets an advantage because of the popularity of football (may not be fair, just the way it is). Just because HBC is HBC has given more free advertising than we could ever buy.

I will put Staley 3rd. but am not sure that is fair. I love watching this team, and I really can't believe I am saying that. I don't really care for basketball, and I used to rather watch curling than women's basketball. That said, just because it is women's basketball, she just can't make the impact that the men's sports can. Now if she coached the football team, might have to move her up the list-maybe not.

I'm now convinced it's the horse team coach....hands down

For you ignorant horse team fans out there - a Southern Equestrian Championship (SEC) [2012] is different than a SEC Championship [2013] although only the most diehard horse team fans will ever know the difference

(for the record, I count myself as a horse team fan - except that I don't trust those beautiful bastards and dare not ever look one straight in the eye as they have been know to steal souls...)
