No way you fake that punt with 10 plus yards to go and Bama in punt safe. Bama's offense hadn't done much with Hurts, no way they drive the entire field and score a TD. At worst you go to OT and you gotta like your chances outlasting a backup QB- love Hurts, but eventually he makes a mistake. At best you get the ball back with a chance to win with a FG or TD- with then best QB in the SEC.

Cost them the game- a game the players played well enough to win. Sad!

A baffling call no doubt!

...Cost them the game-...
How do you know it cost them the game? I'll admit it was a blunder, especially since Alabama kept their defense on the field and lined up as if it could be a fake. But how do you know that the decision alone cost then the game? How do you know Alabama wouldn't have scored anyway. They had just scored 14 unanswered points.

If the play works all ESPN is talking about is how amazing and gutsy the call was. Looked like the play was supposed to be an option left. Fields bailed on it. If he takes the hit and pitches, it was a one on one situation for a first down, maybe more. Probably doesn’t work but Fields made it look way worse.

I thought it was a pretty crazy call at the time, no doubt. But it’s a lot easier to sit and second guess every decision that doesn’t work out.

Fields tried to channel his inner Melvin Ingram.
Fail!
