So sitting here at cla waiting on the game to start and I’m telling ya no more than about 35 fans in attendance. Sad really sad.

Well, put a good/great product on the court and it will sell out. I'm not surprised at the low attendance. Of course a lot of students my have gone home.

It is the middle of a weekday the week before Christmas where everyone is either at work, or if they are off they are probably out of town or have guests visiting. If they want a crowd play the game in the evening… This is also not such an inspiring opponent and we have multiple players out. I can see why few people are showing up for this game.

I don’t see how people are surprised? I wonder how many times we have tried to schedule double headers with Dawns program?

If President Xiden would put a pause on federal income tax payments, like he has for student loan repayments, I'd be there.

Well since you dumped on this thread with politics you could have got a ticket for $5 or less and if federal income tax is really your issue then consider yourself blessed.

"Official " attendance. 9181. Lol
That means the school got paid for 9181. That's all they care about. However many ticket sold is all the school will care about. That's basically the same amount Duke sells for the "sellout" every game. Tiny ass gym there.

They know a whole lot of people aren't coming to these 3pm weekday games. It gives some a chance who wouldn't otherwise attend, but yeah they know that's a sparse game when they put it on the schedule.

(There is a 3pm Wednesday game next week too)

If we were #1 in the nation, every single game would be sold out. No doubt.

Fans are staying away because the product is bad. And they should until it improves. Its the only pressure AD and BOT understand.
That’s a tough bar. Show up if you’re #1. Technically no program won the national title last year so we should stay away from all Gamecock athletic programs until they do, right?

The product has won 75% of its games so far this year. Hopefully after Christmas the crowd will come out.

Stop taking things to the extreme. The OP said we wouldn't sell out if we were #1, I disagreed.

You say they have won 75% of games this year, true. The program also won less than 30% of their games last year, was barely over 50% the year before and has not been ranked in 5 years.

Wasting time discussing attendance in relation to SC men's basketball is not productive. This program has a lot of issues right now. The only one related to fans right now is the lack of success has created apathy amongst our fans that all of us that have watched for the last few years should understand.

You’re right on point #1. Everyone loves a winner.

The program did only win 30% of their games last season but obviously Covid hit the program hard and cancelled a lot of games and practice time. It hit our coach twice. It would have been foolish to make a change last season and it’s unfortunate it took a state lawmaker to prevent our dysfunctional board from making another mistake.

So how do you explain this program not being nationally ranked for 5 years? What is that excuse?

The same way it should be explained for your entire life. It’s rare. You can think changing the coach will fix it but it won’t. South Carolina basketball has been a tough sell since it left the ACC. How many years in your entire existence have we been a nationally ranked program at seasons end?

So you are saying we will never be an over .500 program? That basically we should stop trying.

There are many examples across the country of programs doing exactly what you seem to be saying we can't.

Research programs like FSU football, Oregon football, Baylor basketball.

Never said we would never be over .500. Frank Martins winning percentage is over .500 despite the fact he inherited a world class $hit show from Darrin Horn. 3rd highest winning percentage in modern era behind George Felton, who got pushed out for his drinking issues and McGuire. He has the second most wins. No one has put more talent on campus and through to the NBA.

Our difference is not wanting the program to win. The difference is who we think should lead it. Just because you want change doesn’t mean you want better or more. That change you desire could result in the next Steve Newton or Darrin Horn.

You can cherry pick stats all day long. His total wins are high because he is in his 10th year. He also has made the NCAA once in ten years, never won an SEC regular or tournament title and his program literally has been ranked in one season of his ten.

Dawn Staley took over a program that was a $hit show too.

Legit question for you.....how long do you think Martin, a coach in his 10th year who has made the tourney once, should be given to get back to the NCAAs?

Fogler won the SEC regular season and we didn’t sell out. It’s too big.

You have to win for the total wins to be high. Darrin Horn could have been here 20 years and not get to where Frank is.

Dawn Staley has done a great job. Womens basketball is a different animal. She’s one of the giants of the sport with few of them. She’s in the Hall of Fame. An Olympian. If we’re going to go out and get that type of resume coach then yeah we probably should move on, but my guess is we don’t have anyone near her caliber in line to take over the mens team.

Martin needs to get us back to the tournament. There’s no doubt about that. But this idea that we should be nationally ranked or in the tournament yearly is not realistic. Mike McGee and Eddie Fogler hashed this one out publicly and privately. Fogler eventually stepped aside, but I think he’s been proven right.

We need to be at the very least in the discussion to make the tournament at seasons end for Frank to stay. I think everyone realizes that.

As I’ve stated on here the 1 for 10 tournament is a cherry picked bull crap stat. No one made the tournament in 2020. Martin inherited a dumpster fire that Dean Smith or Coach K or John Wooden couldn’t have got us to the tournament the first 3 years after Horn. Not recognizing that is just being completely ignorant of the state of the program at that time.

Wow, that was impressive! Saw lots of games back then but surely didn't remember that!
Back when fewer schools danced and the NIT had some prestige. All 16 teams played in NYC at MSG.

Billy Walsh injured his hand in a revolving door in NYC, was unable to play, and likely was the reason why we lost to Army in the second round.

So you’re saying the luck has been around for quite some time…LOL

I wish I could have seen some of that old school basketball.

I remember that. Billy was an incredible athlete!

I really don't mean to be rude but all of that is just excuses. Dawn Staley was hired from Atlantic 10 Temple to coach at SC. Yes, she was a hugely successful player and Olympian but still early in her coaching days.

You seem to be focused on Folger and Horn. Fogler left Carolina 20 years ago. Horn has been gone for 10 years. Fogler made more NCAAs than Martin.

We just see this differently and thats cool. You dont think we can expect to have a consistently nationally ranked men's basketball program like, I dont know let's say freaking Tennessee. As a Carolina grad and alum, yes I think we should consistently field a bball team competing the for SEC every year. Frank Martin cant do it. That means we move on.

The place is too big. If we were number one in the country it would not sell out on a regular basis.
umm, the lady g’s have had packed the place for many games in the past few years, i’ve been to a few games for the men’s team that have been packed as well. snow game vs atm if i recall correctly had about ten grand show up
