Mens basketball game

I really don't mean to be rude but all of that is just excuses. Dawn Staley was hired from Atlantic 10 Temple to coach at SC. Yes, she was a hugely successful player and Olympian but still early in her coaching days.

You seem to be focused on Folger and Horn. Fogler left Carolina 20 years ago. Horn has been gone for 10 years. Fogler made more NCAAs than Martin.

We just see this differently and thats cool. You dont think we can expect to have a consistently nationally ranked men's basketball program like, I dont know let's say freaking Tennessee. As a Carolina grad and alum, yes I think we should consistently field a bball team competing the for SEC every year. Frank Martin cant do it. That means we move on.
Would you rather me move on to NIT Dave Odom, Steve Newton or Bill Foster?

I am also a USC grad, but realistically very few of our programs not named women’s basketball “compete for the SEC every year.”

Football hasn’t been anywhere close to competing for a championship since joining the conference except for the 2010-2013 span and only one eastern division to show for that . Baseball hasn’t done much better since Tanner left the dugout.

umm, the lady g’s have had packed the place for many games in the past few years, i’ve been to a few games for the men’s team that have been packed as well. snow game vs atm if i recall correctly had about ten grand show up
Packed and sold out are two different things. I’ve been to every home game for the last eight years.

Never said we would never be over .500. Frank Martins winning percentage is over .500 despite the fact he inherited a world class $hit show from Darrin Horn. 3rd highest winning percentage in modern era behind George Felton, who got pushed out for his drinking issues and McGuire. He has the second most wins. No one has put more talent on campus and through to the NBA.

Our difference is not wanting the program to win. The difference is who we think should lead it. Just because you want change doesn’t mean you want better or more. That change you desire could result in the next Steve Newton or Darrin Horn.
Liking for the obvious straw-man that dude pulled with the .500 comment. Was agnostic about Martin coming into the year but starting to wonder if he figured something new out

Well shut it down to the bottom bowl then. I think the attendance during the championship year was much better than the Martin tenure.
I’ve followed basketball since 1967. It’s just too big. Our fans don’t even know how to cheer for basketball games. We should have remodeled the “ house that frank built….” I’ll be there Wednesday. I’m doing my part. Go cocks.

I remember a game early in Darrin Horns tenure when there were well over 18000 there. In fact I had to sit in the corner On the same side as the players benches in the nosebleed section. It was early in the year and expectations were high and the opponent was an SEC team, Florida I think

Fogler won the SEC regular season and we didn’t sell out. It’s too big.

I think you got your histories mixed up a bit here. When you say, "It's just too big", you are referring to Carolina Coliseum?? Because that's the ONLY arena Fogler's teams played in while he was our head coach. And we haven't played there in some 20 years, so the point is moot.

The Colonial Life Arena opened for the 2002-03 season, during Dave Odom's 2nd season at the helm. But lets get back to Carolina Coliseum, in case I'm just not understanding what you're trying to say here.

The Carolina Coliseum opened for the 1968-69 season, with a capacity of 12,401. It was the largest arena in the state - had a larger capacity than UNC's Carmichael Coliseum, and UK's Memorial Coliseum.

In its inaugural season, the average home attendance was 12,000 (officially listed as 11,999.9) - still the 3rd largest average attendance the arena received. The first seven (7) seasons in C.C. saw average attendances of 10K+, all under McGuire. The top 5 all-time attendances in Carolina Coliseum:

1. 12,524 (70-71)
2. 12,327 (71-72)
3. 12,000 (68-69) (inaugural season - the actual capacity is officially 11,999.9)
4. 11,909 (69-70)
5. 11,770 (72-73)

So, with a total capacity of 12,401, 1970-71's average attendance of 12,524 should certainly be considered a sell-out season, and the team only won the ACC conference title that year and appeared in the Sweet Sixteen, albeit while not winning a game in the tournament. The highest we were ranked that season was #2 - we would finish the season ranked 6th.

The top 5 average attendances all came during the arena's first 5 seasons of use. During those 7 straight seasons of 10K+ average attendance, South Carolina won no less than 19 games in a season, and participated in 4 NCAA tournaments and 2 NIT tournaments. The lone season during that stretch where we failed to reach postseason play was 1969-70, which was our best season ever under McGuire, going 25-3 overall, 14-0 in the ACC and winning the regular-season title. But we all know why we didn't make the postseason that season.

So, the very next season, Carolina Coliseum realized it's highest average attendance. When the fanbase knows what the product will bring, they will come and fill up our arena and give full support.

But then the arena - and the program - went through it's decline. We would not experience another 10,000+ average attendance until 1997-98, long after Frank was gone, and Eddie Fogler was our current head coach. That would be the best average attendance to close out the Coliseum, at 10, 521. The Coliseum would have 3 10K+ average attendances in the final 5 seasons of operation, but all 3 of those would fall below those first 7 seasons' attendance averages.

Dave Odom's first season as our Head Coach would be the Coliseum's last. He saw an average of 10,435 in attendance that season. The inaugural season of Colonial Life Arena (18,000 capacity) saw an average of 12,940 for 2002-03, that would be it's highest single-season average until 2016-17. That would be under Frank Martin's leadership, and was during our NCAAT Final Four season.

The top five (5) average attendance seasons in Colonial Life Arena:

1. 13,396 (16-17)
2. 12,940 (02-03)
3. 12,837 (06-07)
4. 12,618 (17-18)
5. 12,345 (07-08)

South Carolina hasn't won a conference title nor earned a #1 ranking while playing in CLA. Now the Colonial Life Arena - if you're referring to IT as being "too big", you may have an argument. The 13,396 average represents 74.4% of the total capacity. But what we've experienced enough to know, is that when the MBB program is winning, and having relevant success, the fanbase comes and buys tickets and fills the arena.

The CLA experienced it's #1 and #4 highest averages during the two 25+ win seasons under Martin, which can be argued as the most success in back-to-back seasons in the CLA. It's #2 highest average was in it's opening season - while the team was NOT successful, the novelty of having a "state of the art" brand new arena I'm sure added excitement. The 06-07 and 07-08 seasons were also not successful, and were during Odom's final 2 seasons as our coach. They followed back-to-back NIT Championship seasons.

We've realized that we can get upwards of 70% of Colonial Life Arena filled without any real nor consistent levels of success, in conference nor nationally. We've shown amply that the fanbase wants a winner in MBB and would come and support such a winner should they ever be given one to support. I think that the argument is there that should the program ever rise to the level of a #1 ranked team, that we could easily sell-out Colonial Life Arena.....

It's NOT too big......

I guess you looked all that up. I went to all those games so I saw and see what you’re saying. We are a 12,000 seat fan group. The coliseum would and did give us that home court advantage. Almost full is better than 12,000 in an 18000 seat arena not really made for basketball. We can get 8 to 10 thousand unless we just collapse. It would be a better environment in a 12000 seat arena for sure. I went to the game where we paid to be on tv. We had 1500 people there and they asked everyone to move down to the lower seats. I do understand what you’re saying but I just think we will never get to 15 to 18 thousand on average. I hope we win enough to prove otherwise. History says not. Go Cocks! I’ll be there Wednesday.

Had we not left the ACC, the CC attendance numbers likely would not have declined throughout the 1970s, IMO.

Keep in mind that the CLA was not built solely with USC hoops in mind. The idea was to be able to host NCAA regionals, concerts, and other events which had been bypassing Columbia for years due to the "small" size of the CC. Never mind the Confederate flag issue - that came along later, I am not debating taking down or leaving up the flag - simply pointing out (rightly or wrongly), the NCAA's take on it.
