Serious question, what's the right way to handle this? I see five options:
- Ignore him
- pro-avoid any kind of police/fines/repercussions
- con-you and your family get disrespected and justice isn't served
- Haymaker to the mouth
- pro-justice is served, honor is restored to your family
- con-possible jail time, could show up on background checks at work, $ over a guy that wasn't worth your time. Plus its a cheap shot, he was off guard, even though he deserved it.
- call security
- pro-avoid any kind of police/fines/repercussions, justice is served
- con-you didn't really do the serving of the justice, potential ego bruise
- pro-avoid any kind of police/fines/repercussions, justice is served
- give warning, tell him if he doesn't stop then you're going to do everything in your power to make sure he doesn't disrespect your family again, he keeps going and you go kick his a$$ in the parking lot
- pro-you did the serving of the justice, offered a fair system and warning beforehand so he had no excuse
- con-still possible repercussions, also people fight dirty and you never know what some wacko will do in a hidden place
- Try and talk some sense into the guy, be peaceful and friendly
- pro-maybe this brings a real heart change, he breaks down crying and says he got in gambling issues or loved a WBB player that left him and that's why he's obsessed with the game, or his dad used to drink and yell bad things at him, you open up some scripture and let the holy spirit change a life
- con-could go wrong, he's not receptive and further humiliates you, resulting in a catastrophic life altering ego bruise.
Sadly, in today's times, 1 and 3 are your only real options. You could hit him and the guy falls hits his head and you lose your assets or worse he dies and you're hit with manslaughter.
I fear some would approve of alcohol sales if the Taliban was selling it.

Amen ! Alcohol should not be sold at sporting events, especially college sporting events, and where children are present.

I think he's got problems to start with.
I saw the police card pulled on a Florida jerk in our section down at the Swamp one time, and he had his little kid with him. It was both justified and completely effective, being escorted out by the police while holding the son's hand. Humiliating but well-deserved.
I generally agree, particularly when it pertains to people operating unobtrusively and/or within their own personal space.
Well for sure, some handle their social drinking better than others. Some like getting a buzz...
I handle my social drinking extremely well....I don't do it.
However, there is an exception to every rule. Where I play country violin at a craft brewer, they serve a wicked coffee flavored porter beer. It is free, and I won't ever turn it down. I sip it over a couple hours. Unbelievable!

But I guess I just don't understand why you turned around and asked him to pipe down in the first place? A fan yelling at a basketball game doesn't sound very out of line to me? I think the only reason I would ever ask a fan to pipe down at an athletic event is if they were screaming profanities, which it doesn't sound like the guy did until you said something to him? Maybe his behavior was a little worse than you described in you original post, but I'm not sure a spectator should ever ask another spectator to be quiet at a ball game. It's sort of like asking people not to sing along at a concert.

Because that institutes a police state where by people are required to make a determination before entering of whether they want to drink or not, and would have to be restricted in where they can go within the stadium based off that choice and that is absolutely insane, could never be enforced and is a lot of trouble being made to appease the minority who is worried about this being more of an issue than it really is. Every time you step out of your home and go out to eat, go to the movies, or anywhere else in public you subject yourself to possibly interacting with drunk (/high?) belligerent people. I had to deal with one at work today... 4:00 in the afternoon, stunk my office up like a brewery and opened by telling me he just spent an hour on the phone with our customer service lighting them up because they would not grant him access to his son’s account. I did not get to say “well sir you are relegated to this portion of the building because I am sober and do not want to deal with your drunkenness... Should we also confine these people who want to drink to separate areas of a restaurant? Designate only certain areas of the city where the drinking public can travel to? Where does it stop? This is a free country which unfortunately allows some people to be free to do things you might not like. Segregation is not the answer... Being a grown up and dealing with it is your option- kudos to the OP for dealing with it better than most of us would have.
Probably right thing to do is #5 and then #3 if necessary. But I wouldn't fault anyone for going straight to #3 or to utilize #1. I think as tempting as #2 and #4 are they would be a mistake.
Please. A police state because someone suggests alcohol only be sold in specific sections? That's hyperbole. It's all about revenue, right? Let's see if tickets in those sections will sell for a few bucks more. Better yet, let's see if folks are willing to pay a few bucks more to sit in the non-alcoholic sections.
There's precedent for such a thing. I think a number of NASCAR tracks have non-alcoholic areas reserved for families, or at least they did.

For what it's worth, I feel the same way about a concealed carrier in the crowd (or anywhere else). If they aren't causing a problem, what do we care what they have under their jacket? I wonder if all the other civil libertarians in this thread are willing to extend that logic to everything some consider a vice, or if it's just beer sales that ignite their passions.
My guess is this asshole is an asshole whether he's drinking or not. While I agree people do and say things they'd never do sober. I've also seen stone cold sober people be raging jerks.

Its exactly what most have said,you simply ran into one of those a hole fans that i personally have ran into many times in my life as a gamecock and panther fan. Granted the use of the f word over and over in your face is rare(because most people including myself will do something at that point and i personally think you should have too) but its not rare to run into an obnoxious fan at sporting events...i,m guessing if you had it to do again you would simply go get security and problem solved. I,m not against alchohol sales at all,but it does not help jerks like this ,thats for sure. But bad apples are gonna be bad apples regardless.
