South Carolina offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon had the following to say...
** In general try to do everything at a fast pace, so the new tempo on offense fits their style as a program in practice. Want to keep high intensity. Want to be able to dictate the tempo of the game.
** The OL in general drives everything you’re doing on the offense no matter what you're doing. Getting all of those guys on the exact same page is huge.
** Want to give everyone involved an offense they can be proud of. Want to get the playmakers the ball. Going to compete at a high level and compete until the very end of every game.
** Anytime you get a guy like Deebo back who can score from any place on the field that helps you. It's a tremendous help and you can do a lot of different things with his skillset.
** just focused on being the best that day. Ignore the noise from everyone else. Focus on getting better that particular day. Were good in some areas today and sloppy in others.
** How good can the WR corps be? “It better be better than it was today.”
** The tempo will change from game to game. Have to be able to do that.
** We have to be able to run the football to be a good offense. Have to be efficient and effective to be a good offense.
** Rico Dowdle has done a good job this offseason of doing things to prevent injuries and a lot of guys have taken those steps off the field this offseason. There's always a learning process with that for a young player. Some injuries can't be prevented, though.
** It's up to the coaches to put the players in a position to succeed. If you're asking a player to do something he can't do, that's the coach's problem.
** "I want to be aggressive. I feel like in order to score points, you have to try to score points. That's going to be my mindset as far as going out there and calling it. Sometimes I might have to get reeled back a little bit and I'm okay with that. We want to be aggressive in everything that we do."
** Confirms that he and most of the offensive staff met with the Eagles this offseason. Duce Staley was there connection there. Those coaches do a great job. A lot of the visit was a confirmation on how to do things they already want to do, but you always pick up stuff when you visit with other staffs.
** Scored 24 points per game last year. That's not enough.
** McClendon is still working with the punt returners some but not like he did last year now that he's the playcaller. There are a number of different players working at that position and it's an open competition.
** Asked if they've considered a package for Dakereon Joyner. "We'll see." Wants Joyner focused on just playing the quarterback position and grasping everything there as opposed to a package.
** Jake Bentley will probably have more decisions to make this year.
** They have a good feeling of what they want to do on offense and now they have to fine tune everything. Went back to level 1 of the install for practice today and they'll work off of that.
** You want to make it as easy as it can be to be learned. You don't want to beat yourself because you're too complicated and you want to make sure everything works systemically. Two concepts might looks good but you have to be able to marry them together so that they work together.
