I have had the Oklahoma Joe 3-1 for about 5 years, wife bought it for me for Christmas. I use it 3-5 times a week. I have only used the gas side twice in 5 years, and that was in the first month I had it. First time I've ever had a gas grill. I'm just not a gas guy, I prefer charcoal, it's what I've always known. I'll probably go back with Oklahoma Joe when that one's done, but it will be a charcoal only.
I also bought a cheap (Trail Embers) pellet on closeout ($240) from Tractor Supply about 3 years ago. I wanted to start with something cheap, and if I liked it I'd upgrade. I've never upgraded, it's simple and works every time I fire it up, never had one issue with it. When it gives out, I'll upgrade to a Rec-Tec (my dad has one), but I'm gonna keep riding it until the bitter end.
If I'm grilling steaks, burgers, pork chops, chicken, I use the charcoal. You just can't beat the taste IMO. When I put a butt, roast, brisket, etc. on (smoking), I use the pellet (along with a Wi-Fi digital temp probe). The pellet is just like an oven with smoke, it's insanely easy. My wife even uses it from time to time. She doesn't touch the charcoal grill.
