OT Will Smith Chris Rock Confrontation

I don't walk in the man's shoes, but I know a man needs to keep his mouth shut when considering insulting another man's family.
Two things to keep in mind. 1) Both Smiths are star celebrities in their own right. She isn't just Will Smith's date at this function. She's a public figure. 2) Every celebrity who has ever been the subject of a shock-comedian's joke is family to somebody. Unless you eliminate insult-comedy entirely, your family rule won't work.

This is a fine line. As a celebrity, part of your ridiculously inflated salary is to come equip with thick skin.

However, there have to be limitations. If Rock and/or writers knew in advance that she had this condition, the joke should have been scratched.
Good point. My only counter would be the Smith's open willingness to place their family problems on full display for the world to see - including the alopecia issue.

Has to be fake - any man worth a crap would have jumped on his a$$
If not fake Chris Rock has to do something or it will be open season on stand up comedians

I'm sure they were aware. She shaved her head proudly on Instagram/Facebook and also documented it in celeb splash magazines. The Smith's otherwise enjoy bringing their issues into America's living rooms.

Can't imagine what would have happened if Ricky Gervais had hosted.

Late night comedians and SNL will have a gold mine with this, no doubt.

Let's say that Rock slapped him back and they then fought on the stage. The professional fall out from that for both of them would have been disastrous. Yes, it was a mistake and inappropriate (due to a medical condition) for Rock to make her a butt of one of his jokes. But Smith could have handled it better with a man-to-man conversation after the show. Regina Hall made a joke about his marriage. Did he say anything to her about it? As it is, Smith made a complete ass of himself, including repeatedly shouting profanities from his seat. This is especially true since his initial reaction was to laugh at the joke. Now, the Academy just announced a formal review into the incident. Consequently, I'd be surprised if he gets another Oscar anytime soon. Another nomination may even be a ways off. I guess Rock could have pressed charges, rather than decline to do so. But, that might be professional suicide.

That wasn’t fake. It’s called being professional. There is a time and place for everything. Hitting people is not the answer especially when you are at work. Some people have leveled heads. Will smith was completely out of line and unprofessional and Chris rock had the proper response to the incident.

One other thing: Smith cried like a baby when he was on stage accepting the Oscar. And in his speech, he said he hoped the Oscars would have him back. I believe he knows that he royally screwed up. He may not admit it in public. But, I believe he KNOWS.

Anyone that would not have jumped on his butt should give up his man card. Eye for an Eye
Man card, lol. One could argue it’s more mainly to Stand ground and not cause a scene and fight on national television. Killing your career with it. Pride only gets you so far. There is so much wrong with your statement and it is childish. This isn’t a teenage locker room. Be a grown man not a boy.

Will and his wife need to grow thicker skin or just stay home and isolate themselves. They were at a show where Chris Rock was a host. Being singled out and roasted is part of it!

he is an ACTOR, that is what he does for a LIVING!!
Whether he was sincere or not, Smith has now apologized to Rock. And I suspect he will get some sort of punishment from both the Oscars' Academy and the actors' guild, deservingly so.

I am probably the only person in South Carolina who did not know that Chris Rock was born in Andrews, South Carolina.

Maybe it was just those two that planned it, Bu ti am Guessing the Oscars knew about it.
They are talking about stripping his Oscar. Will smith career is going to suffer. It wasn’t planned but I will play for the heck of it. What exactly would they benefit? Will smith will take a hit. Chris took a hit for the joke. It was at the end of the show so ratings didn’t increase and everyone will forget about it by next year and not tune it. So what exactly did the Oscar’s gain? They don’t make money off the view talking about it the next morning.

I'd be surprised if they stripped his Oscar from him. But, I agree with you that this was not planned and that Smith' career will suffer.

If nothing else this has been an interesting case of seeing everyone’s opinions of what they deem as “a green light for fighting”.
This is why I tell my kids to never make fun of someone appearance or body - because some folks feel joking about that is a green light for them to get physical with you.
So while I disagree with that stance under most situations (I guess never say never) I tell my kids all the time if you go there and the person you’re talking to is one of these “I’ll fight you over looking at me the wrong way” types then you’re inviting that onto yourself.

...it was so staged!!

The more I have looked at this the more I believe it was staged. Look at this slap, as compared to a wrestler slapping another wrestler. Rock had his hands behind his back and made no move at all to defend himself while this was happening. Both had very exagerated movements after the slap, and then seemed to be smiling afterwards. Rock has seen his ticket prices for his shows go up an incredible amount after this. Watch WWE and then watch this and see if you can tell a difference between a staged face slap and this. Either way it was silly and not surprising from the venue or from actors in general.

So Will Smith puts his multi-million dollar career on the line to give the Oscars a ratings boost? Hmmm, yeah that seems like a sensible thing to do.
C'mon guys - its not staged.
Dunno. Look how he was protected post incident. At the very least, he should have been asked to leave. Instead, they have him stick around and he comes up with this emotional award speech within 10 minutes?

If it was real, a better way for Will Smith to protect his wife would be to insist on monogamy. I've caught a couple of interviews with them over the years and he comes across as a lap dog. He's far more into her than she's into him. Not to mention the infidelity with a guy her son's age. That's pressure cooker material.

It’s not infidelity if you are a cuck, just saying….. he has admitted to being one.

Pull up a rastlin slap side by side with this and you will see. Also the point that he assaults someone on stage in front of millions of people, yet isn't even asked to leave? They Jussied us.

You are going to ask the guy who is about to win one of the most prestigious awards at the show to leave? How are you going to fill the slot of him winning male actor of the year. What do you do with the award?

Regardless of what anyone has to say about this incident it boils down to this: One man told a bad joke, the other committed assault and battery. In any other case the assaulter would be arrested and charged with a crime, but not here?

Chris rock refused to press charges. The same thing would happen in any other situation if the person refused to press charges.

Lol. The media reaction is priceless .

Btw. I’m guessing this puts Kanye on the clock. JS.

That’s just simply not true.
“The [Los Angeles] city attorney could bring charges based upon the evidence without necessarily relying upon the victim,” Steve Cooley, the Los Angeles County District Attorney from 2000 to 2012, told The Post.

“The victim does not control whether or not a prosecutor should file charges,” Cooley continued.

“However, charges actually can and should be filed because the offense was against the state of California. It’s not Chris Rock versus Will Smith in a criminal matter. The LAPD and the city attorney should not close the door on what was an obvious criminal offense and is easily provable,” said Cooley.

Let me clarify. You said assault would equal jail time. That’s what I was saying isn’t true. For most people it’s not going to be jail time. Not with a decent record. Secondly in most instances where the person doesn’t want to bring charges, the wishes are going to be acknowledged. I wasn’t saying it isn’t true that charges can’t be brought.

I got arrested for assault in college. I didn’t serve jail time and basically did 30 hours of community service and got it expunged.

Gotcha. When I said jail time, I meant he should have been removed and charged with a crime like everyone else.

It's not up to Chris Rock. This is a felony and charges can be brought by law enforcement especially with clear video evidence that a crime was committed. The victim cannot drop charges in a felony.

It’s not a felony in this case it is a misdemeanor. It also would not be assault. It would be battery if your going here him. Good luck getting a jury to convict him after the joke. Most would see it as just. The prosecutor for this very case is quoted saying “You would never get a conviction on will smith.”
