SCDOT says added 2 cents gas tax on July 1st will help raise an estimated $642 million for road paving

You can get that tax money back on your state tax return, but you Must keep all of your gas receipts as evidence you paid a specific amount of gas tax during the year. It’s the little gimmick that made legislators pass the law. Of course the knew nobody would collect all of their gas receipts for an entire year.
I did, the first year anyway. Was in no way worth it for the small deduction I got.

My parents live off Martintown Road in North Augusta, and it was repaved completely last fall I believe. Pot holes appeared basically overnight. Not one or two either. The entire new paved stretch was littered with pot holes of all sizes. Those pot holes have been "patched" multiple times too, but they just reappear.

I hate taxes as much as the next guy, but I'm all for taxes to improve infrastructure. There's no other way to pay for roads and bridges. However, with this kind of work quality, what's the point? It's an embarrassment.

I think it's time to pay by the job, not the hour and to qualify a list of contractors based on their demonstrated performance over time. If companies are not good, don't award the contract to them. If the road fails, make them do the repairs free.

Like some others, I have no problem with it if it actually went to the roads, which it never seems to do. It’s actually kind of surprising how bad some of the roads are in the plush neighborhoods around here. Saramont off Trenholm has been terrible for a long time, and that’s just one example. I can’t believe the residents haven’t put the pressure on numerous times

My in-laws live in NA. (As it relates to roads......), Is there any town in America with more manhole covers per mile??? 🤣 🤣😡

If tax money was usually spent on what it was supposed to be spent on, we probably wouldn't be talking about a tax increase to pay for maintenance that should have already been budgeted. You can pretty well bank on the money not being spent on what it was supposed to be spent on. It's the nature of political leaders to want to point to new projects and say "look what I built!" It's much less exciting to say "look what I maintained!"
Oh, it will go where it is supposed to for a year or two. Then once they have a surplus, that will be reappropriated, and the next year they go over budget on roads, they will cancel projects until there is a surplus, rinse and repeat until they're raising taxes again in 10-15 years for an infrastructure budget they've already gutted.

When I was young we had concrete highways that are under the asphalt today. I'm sure some of you on here remember that.

I don't know who paved the street right here at home, but it has stood the test of time for over 20 years and just now seeing some cracks. That's the material they need to pave these new projects.

And malfunction junction continues to malfunction for another decade or so.

Do other states have on and off ramps that crisscross?

Maybe they will use that money to hire some help that actually has some common sense and can design a better option during construction than the nonsense they have in place between Spartanburg and the state line. One, I doubt they will finish it in my lifetime anyway, but I would like to travel that corridor at least a few times where a little fender bender, or a flat tire, doesn't back traffic up half way to Charlotte

The I-26 work is already underway starting out toward Chaplin headed in. They’ve been clearing trees near the koon rd bridge over 26 for months. Hoping we get an on and off ramp right there. But that project on 26 is schedule to be I think till 2030.

We don't even compare to Hendersonville and Asheville. Went Friday and it was an absolute nightmare. Population growth is killing us and our old charm.
My sister and family live off of the Hwy 64 exit. They were headed to Pigeon Forge on Friday. Brother-in-law said it took them well over an hour from their house just to get to I-40.

Can you even imagine the mess?!??! And seeing how long it's taking them to widen I-20 toward Augusta, can you fathom how long it'll take to re-do malfunction-junction?? 5yrs is my guess.
Well if the bureaucrats had listened to the engineers when it was built, and allowed them to build it as large as they designed, we wouldn't be in the position we are in now with it needing to be expanded because it's too small.

The Irmo to little mountain I-26 expansion is a completely separate project. Called The Midlands connection project. Separate project with separate tax dollars from the malfunction junction project.

You want an exit ramp at the koon rd bridge? That would be a cluster. Thankfully that is not happening. They will only be replacing the bridge, as they are with all bridges & interchanges between Irmo & little mountain.
Now the at peak exit…that’s going to be a doozy. A diverging diamond. Google that, or check it out on YouTube. Only 1 other like it in state. Fort mill off I-77 I believe.

Sure looks like they are making an exit there, at least westbound. They have the footprint for a ramp there now.

But most neighborhoods don't have state roads, the are usually county roads or some are even private roads.

Lots of resurfacing happening on secondary roads in my area. I'm grateful for it. But I again traveled I-95 today from I-26 to the Georgia line, where the highway opens up into six splendid lanes. It never gets any better on our side of the border: holes, ruts, and cracked pavement. That road is a disgrace to the people of S.C.

Traveled from Cola to Charleston on I-26 today. When it narrows to 2 lanes beyond dixiana, it becomes a cluster all the way to Summerville. An expansion to 3 lanes needs to happen SOON.

Surely our lowcountry politicians traveling back and forth to Cola for work know this….?

It's already been approved. Give it 20 years and it will be done.

The South Carolina road system is a national joke. We are where we are because idiot voters keep voting in trash politicians who are only concerned with lining their own pockets. It would be nice to have decent roads to drive on in this state but it will never happen. Just accept it.
